George Ron Davies
1929 ~ 2022
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ron Davies on Tuesday, March 22, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. George “Ron” Davies was born on March 18, 1929, in Mission City, B.C. to his parents George and Hilda (nee Holland) Davies. Ron and his brother Len grew up primarily in Prince Albert National Park in the 1930’s and early 1940s, where their father was the Chief Warden. They went to school in a one room schoolhouse, where they would have to bike seven miles, uphill, both ways on flat tires (as Ron liked to say). Ron was not a fan of school and preferred the company of the outdoors, so he left for Yellowknife when he was 16 years old where he would work as a miner and then a commercial fisherman. Always looking for an adventure, he joined the army and landed in Korea in 1950. After serving in the army, Ron moved back home to Saskatchewan where he entered the warden service in 1955 with Parks Canada. Ron’s career in the warden service spanned over 35 years with Parks Canada, taking him to places such as Prince Albert National Park, Kootenay, Wood Buffalo, and Nahanni National Parks.
Ron met his wife Reta Tait at the Royal Bank in Prince Albert where Reta was working at the time. He would tell us it was not because he was rich, but because he had a cousin who worked with Reta, and she had somehow convinced Reta to meet with Ron. On October 2, 1954, Reta married “the wildest man north of the river” as Grandpa Tait would tell her. The meeting of these two beautiful souls produced five children and 60 years of marriage. Reta always stood by his side, looking after their small children while Ron would be out on his long patrols in Prince Albert National Park. The family lived in the Park until 1970, when they moved to Ron’s grandparent’s homestead in Alingly where Reta operated the Alingly Store and Post Office until 1983. They then spent a number of years at Fort Chipewyan, AB, Fort Simpson, NWT, and Fort McMurray, AB. They came home to Alingly in the late 90’s, where they resided until moving to Prince Albert in 2013.
Ron was predeceased by his wife, Reta; his sons, Lyle and Mark; his daughter, Beverley; his parents, George and Hilda; his brother, Len; his parents-in-law, Arthur and Mary Tait; brothers-in-law, William (Lillian) Tait, Arnold Tait, Colin Tait, Leslie Tait, and Alvin (Melva) Tait; sisters-in-law, Ruby (Blaine) Young, Doris (Richard) Cook, Gladys (Homer) Johnston, and Iolene (Lloyd) Halcro.
Ron is survived by his children, Colleen (Denis) Harmatiuk; Milton (Elizabeth) Davies; his grandchildren, Zachary, Hayden (Courtney), Colby (Paige), Callie, Ty, Luke, Cody, Tait, Jade, Amber, Travis, Lacey, and Cassie; his great-grandchildren, Owen, Ben, Clay, and Layne. Also left to mourn him is Richelle Santos, the granddaughter of Dad and Mom’s heart and our special sister and Tita. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law; Dorothy Tait, Irene Tait, and Shirley Tait.
Ron will always be remembered for his quick wit, good stories, big heart, and his sense of humor. He always made friends wherever he went through his welcoming, inclusive, and open-minded presence. He was a true patriarch of his family, which he loved more than anything. He will be forever missed by those who knew him as friend, Dad, Uncle, Grumpa, Robopop, and the bionic man.
The Funeral Service for Ron will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, at River Park Funeral Home, 301 River Street West, Prince Albert, SK, with Pastor Nora Vedress officiating.
