It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Gabrielle Gareau on February 2, 2026, at the age of 88. Gaby was born on May 27, 1937, to Ferdinand and Marie Schmitt and grew up in Domremy, Saskatchewan. She married Jean-Paul Gareau on August 9, 1955, and devoted her life to her family as a loving wife, mother, and homemaker. After raising her children with unwavering care, Gaby later found deep fulfillment providing home care services to elderly community members in Bellevue and the surrounding area. Friendships she made through this work enriched the rest of her life. Gaby was strong, resilient, and devoted to her family as a wife, mother, sister, aunt and daughter. Above all, she cherished her grandchildren—doting and worrying over each one in equal measure. They will forever remember the special time spent playing cards with Mémère. Gaby was especially proud to become a great-grandmother in 2023 and grateful to witness the joyful beginnings of a new generation of card players. Gaby passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. She leaves to mourn her passing her children and grandchildren Fernand (Cynthia) Gareau, Regina, SK (Paul, Robert, Toniesha, Sawyer, Landon & Terron); Philip (Colleen) Gareau, London ON (Marc, Randi, Sean & Lacey); Muriel (Bryan) Banks, Regina, SK; Lisa (Jason) Corrigan, Twin Falls, ID; Janet (Hubert) Parent, Birch Hills, SK (Ambure, Cole, Gabriel, Isabelle, Aimey & Cody); Rupert (Paula) Gareau, Cowichan Bay, BC (Maddy, Bailey & Jesse); Gary (Jaquie) Gareau, Coquitlam, BC (McKenna and Achala); Andre (Jamie) Gareau, St Albert, AB (Alex, Amelia & Avery); her sisters Alice and Thérèse; her sisters-in-law Lucie Gareau and Simone Gareau, her brother-in-law Denis Lajeunesse, and many dear nieces and nephews. Gaby was predeceased by her parents and husband, her daughters Delores and Evelyn, her sister Marie-Ange and brothers Charles and Pierre, her son-in-law Jim Chornoby, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law. Rest peacefully, Maman. You were blessed in life, and you won every hand.
The Gareau family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the extraordinary staff of the Bellevue Care Home. Donations in Gaby’s memory may be made to the Bellevue Care Home by cheque or e-transfer to abbi.foyer@gmail.com.
