Heaven was looking for an All Star Goalie & Fred was called up for the position.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce his passing at Royal University Hospital. He is lovingly remembered by his daughters Dana (Dave) Hyshka, Lori Davis & his second family Wally, Lucille, Vince, Carolyn & Zack Hyshka. Fred was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Florence Cluff & his parents John Burkosky & Lorna Schroeder.
Fred started his goalie days at a very young age & he went on to play junior hockey with the Prince Albert Mintos, Estevan Bruins & the Anavets before being called up to the New York Rangers Training Camp twice in 1960 & ’61. His desire to succeed was established as a young person playing goal & winning championships with his hockey clubs. Fred was inducted into the Prince Albert Hall of Fame in 2005 & he continued to play with many senior leagues. He was thrilled to fulfill a dream to play in the annual Snoopy Tournament in San Diego and to win the whole tournament in 2006! Fred started in the Life Insurance Industry in 1963 & he went on to become a Provincial manager with Manulife which moved him to Saskatoon in 1974. He brought this agency from the bottom to the top in sales volume in Canada within only a few years. His ability to inspire & influence his coworkers was very evident. Many will remember Fred from ‘the arcade days.’ He inspired many teenagers by teaching them how to work for their red quarters & he guided many in troubled times. He provided a fun, safe place for them to escape but also a place where parents knew they could find their kids with no problem, back in the day before cell phones. Fred loved spending time at his cottage at Birch Bay, Emma Lake for the last 42 years. He was obsessed with keeping everything beautiful there with his line trimming & leaf blowing and his neighbours would often hear him vacuuming his sun deck! He loved this place & we will continue to keep his presence there forever.
Thank you Larry & Jackie Brewster & all of the staff at RUH for all your care & support during this last month.
A celebration of his life will take place at a later date. Arrangements in care of Mourning Glory Funeral Services. 306-978-5200 www.mourningglory.ca.
