Frank Vick
1929 ~ 2025
Franklin James Vick was born on Aug 3, 1929, at a small homestead located five miles east of St. Walburg, Saskatchewan. Frank’s childhood was enriched by a family life shared with three brothers and three sisters. Frank’s hard work ethic, energy and creativity, was born from the hardships of living on a farm during the Great Depression. Despite those early challenges, he found joy exploring the surrounding fields and forests trapping, hunting, and playing sports with friends whenever he could. It was also during these formative years that Frank became a passionate, self-taught naturalist with an abiding admiration and respect for animals, both domestic and wild.
Frank received his education in a single room school in Deer Valley, located six miles from home, and completed high school within St. Walburg. After graduating he enrolled in a three-year correspondence course in the field of civil engineering and obtained a permanent position in the department of highways in the early 1950’s. While stationed in Moose Jaw, Frank met his wife Patricia and they were married on October 29, 1955.
Frank’s career continued to advance rapidly. He accepted a position as assistant engineer with the BC Highway department and supervised the construction of a stretch of the Trans Canada Highway. In 1956, Frank returned to Saskatchewan, joining the Department of Municipal Roads. Together with Patricia, he established a permanent home in the city of Prince Albert, and started a family. A final career move came in 1964 when Franklin moved to the private sector, and became a local manager of Torchinsky Consulting, where would remain until retirement.
During the 60’s and 70’s years, Frank was actively involved in the minor hockey and baseball leagues. He was a respected coach and role model – in later years many parents and former players reflected on the positive impact he had made on their lives. In 1975, Frank and Pat moved to a newly constructed home on an acreage north of the city. Here Frank established a hobby farm where many types of fowl were raised and allowed to range freely. Another passion was woodworking – Frank was a talented artist and woodcarver who devoted many hours in his shop carving wildlife and assembling numerous other imaginative creations.
Frank and Pat traveled extensively, venturing to England, France, Ireland and Holland in order to gather information for a family history book that Frank later compiled for his extended family. In 1992 Frank retired, allowing further travel all over Canada and the USA accompanied by friends and family in a recently purchased motor home. Frank also became very involved in the Good Sam travel club, organizing many trips and spearheading local events.
Franklin will be remembered as spirit endowed with an inquisitive nature, vivid imagination, a sharp wit, and a sense of humor. Franklin is survived by his sons, Doug and Bart (Tammy); grandchildren, Jenna (Bo) and Dustin; great-grandchild, Joey Madeline; sister, Ruth; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; his parents, Harry and Lydian; siblings, Bill, Hugh, Lloyd, Esther, Frederick, and Jack. Franklin’s younger sister Barbara passed away on May 3, 2025, following him by exactly one day.
The Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in the Arbor Lounge at River Park Funeral Home, in Prince Albert, SK.
