Franklin James McKay
July 8, 1951 – February 12, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Frank on February 12, 2024 from Cancer. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and a friend to many. Frank was born at the Union Hospital in Meadow Lake, SK on July 8, 1951. As a child, he grew up in Meadow Lake and later moved to Prince Albert, SK where he attended Riverside School. As a teenager, he enjoyed playing hockey and he especially loved playing Football with the Riverside Rams. Following graduation from high school, he married the love of his life, Susan Taylor in 1970. In March 1971, Frank and Susan had their first daughter, Tamara Beth. Shortly after, the family moved to Thompson, MB. Frank was working with INCO where he made many friends and grew closer to his sister Helen and her husband Randy.
Frank and Susan moved back to Prince Albert in 1973, where he gained employment with the City of Prince Albert for a short time. He then worked with CN for a couple of years, before he started his career at the Prince Albert Pulp Mill. Frank and Susan soon bought their home and in February 1978, Jennifer Dawn was born and completed Frank and Susan’s family.
Frank’s pride and joy were his daughters Tamara and Jennifer. He loved to hear Tamara play music, whether it was the flute, guitar or singing. He was also a musician and he liked to jam with his harmonica and he also learned how to play guitar as well. When the girls were young, every summer Frank and Susan would take the girls camping, fishing and swimming at Sandy Bay in Candle Lake. As the girls grew older, Frank attended Tamara’s convocation from University and then Jennifer’s graduation from the RCMP Training Academy, Depot. His other pride and joy in his life were his two grandchildren Owen and Claire, who he loved with all his heart.
During the summer time, anyone looking for Frankie knew where to find him…. on the golf course! He played hundreds and hundreds of rounds at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling club over the years. He was a legend in the clubhouse and he would always have an entertaining story or two to share with his golf friends or strangers after a round or two of golf. He played in Men’s Night for many years with his good friends Vic and Gary along with the rest of the golf gang.
Frank was always one to try something new. He knew how to play hockey, football, softball, slo-pitch, cross country ski, downhill ski, curl, canoe, fish, long distance biking and of course playing Darts. He was an amazing dart player and he enjoyed going to the Elks Club and the Legion to play in the Dart Leagues. Frank was also an artist. He loved to paint with acrylics, draw and write poetry.
Frank will be remembered for his contagious laugh, his sense of humor, and his stories. Frank will be forever be remembered and cherished by his wife of 53 years Susan (Taylor) McKay, his daughters Tamara McKay and Jennifer (Jeremy) Armstrong along with his two grandchildren Owen and Claire Armstrong. He leaves behind his brothers Melvin McKay and Wesley (Marilyn) McKay and his sisters Helen Herkert and Floranne Ebach. Also, to mourn Frank’s loss is his sister in-law Nancy Taylor and brothers in law Billy (Annie) Taylor, Michael Taylor, and David (Charlene Bernard) Taylor as well as countless cousins, nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents Collin and Marjorie (Plant) McKay, his mother-in-law Betty (Grimwood) Taylor and father-in-law Bill Taylor, his brothers Ken, George, Floyd, Gerald, Dale, David, and his sisters Lillian, Rose Boyer, Vera Servetnyk, Freda Church and many other close relatives and friends.
