Florence Nellie Charles was born on March 28th, 1941 in Potato River, SK to Betsy and Percy Charles. Her journey peacefully ended in the comfort of her home on August 7th, 2020. Florence was the second youngest amongst 11 other siblings. Florence spent approximately the first 6 years of her childhood in Potato River before her family moved to the Morin’s Hill area in La Ronge where they would permanently reside. She shared many interesting stories of how the area looked prior to houses being built, she described how several canvas tents made up the settlement. They had their very own community back then. Florence attended the All Saints Anglican School in La Ronge before her and a few siblings were forcibly taken to a residential school where they were then separated. Florence described the experience as scary and lonely when she was taken from her family. Luckily for her, she quickly made friends and saw other familiar faces (cousins) at the school she attended. Once she was back in La Ronge after residential school, Florence worked at the local fish plant for many years. She eventually moved onto custodial jobs in various places which included the Northland Hotel, The Motor Hotel and then the Lac La Ronge Indian Band where she worked for 10+ years.
Florence gave birth to 5 beautiful children, Mike, Sheri, Wesley, Ann and Wilma. She had 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren (chapans). She loved her children, her grandchildren and her chapans so much, but they loved her back even more. She was always so joyful and happy. She welcomed everyone with open arms and made everyone feel so loved. Her sense of humor was like no other, her sarcasm and silly jokes could brighten anyone’s day. She had a deep love for Elvis and enjoyed listening to her old tunes while playing her “scratch n win” tickets. She never missed an episode of her favourite program “East Enders” and enjoyed her evening tea with her family every night. She always loved a good game of poker or radio bingo, but there is nothing she loved more than just being surrounded by her family. Florence had a tough life she endured many physical health battles but always overcame them. She was a true warrior; she showed everyone what it meant to be brave, even in times of uncertainty. She was the family’s matriarch and she will be missed so incredibly much but her legacy will live on through those who loved her.
