With heavy hearts we are saddened to announce that our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend Eunice Evans passed away on February 8, 2024 at the age of 95. She slipped away peacefully with her family by her side.
Eunice was born to Isaac and Katrina Voth on August 18, 1928, in Waldheim, Saskatchewan. She was second oldest of five children and grew up on a farm in the Aylsham district. After completing high school she worked for a time at the local grocery store, then obtained a hair dressing licensed certificate at the Beauty Nook in Aylsham in 1946.
Eunice married Willard Evans of Hagen, Saskatchewan on November 8, 1947. Eunice and Willard were married for 57 years until Willard passed on March 16, 2004. They started their married life in Hagen then purchased a farm and moved to the Fisher School District before retiring into Birch Hills in 1999. She is survived by her children: Gary (Bev) of Birch Hills; Diane (Dick) Doering of Airdrie; Merle (Joy) of Prince Albert; Doug (Rhonda) of Saskatoon; Darrell (Linda) of Saskatoon; James (Peter) of Ottawa; Tina (Mark) Soloducha of Edmonton; Carole (Ted) Eytcheson of Prince Albert. She had 23 Grandchildren, 44 Great Grandchildren and 6 Great-Great Grandchildren. Eunice is survived by her sister Betty Udahl of Moose Jaw and Paul Voth of Palm Desert. She was pre-deceased by her husband Willard; her son Richard; her son-in-law Bob Braaten; her granddaughters Julie Soloducha, Emma Lesage-Evans, Shauna Herron; her grandsons Robin Evans, Daniel Evans; great granddaughter Addison Dunn; her parents Isaac and Katrina Voth; sister Evelyn Waite; her brother David Voth in infancy; her brother-in-law Gerald Udahl; her sister-in-law Linda Voth.
Eunice volunteered for many organizations over the past 70 years, starting as a member of the Fisher Community Ladies’ Auxiliary providing food for new neighbours and neighbours with illnesses, new babies, celebrations and hardships of many kinds. Eunice and Willard also spent many hours on the Fisher District History Book Committee in the late 1970’s. Eunice was very active throughout her life in the Lutheran Church, spending uncountable hours volunteering in various church activities throughout the years, from confirmations, to weddings, funerals, anniversaries, and other celebrations. This not only included preparing and serving food, but also cleaning the church and being active in the Lutheran Ladies’ League. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 122, Dad having served in World War II. Eunice also volunteered at many school functions.
With the opening of the Birchview Nursing Home in 1983, Eunice volunteered weekly at the resident’s hair salon. In addition, she was a regular helping out in the activity room on Bingo Fridays. Eunice knew it was time to stop when she realized she was older than most of the residents whose hair she was doing! Eunice enjoyed volunteering at the Birch Hills Thrift Shop, as well as helping out at various Birch Hills Museum activities.
One of the not for profit organizations Eunice was most proud of being part of was the Birch Hills Chapter of Blankets for Canada. She either knit or crocheted well over 1000 lap, double or queen sized blankets, the majority of which were made with donated yarn. Even though the yarn was usually a mismatch of colours, Eunice always made sure the blankets were works of art that anyone would be proud to own.
On December 9, 2017, Eunice was awarded the Canada 150 Medal to recognize and thank her for her service to the community. This medal is awarded to select unsung heroes of the community who make an impact without expecting any recognition. While Eunice was very pleased and honoured to be the recipient of this award, she never was comfortable being the centre of attention.
All her life Eunice was an avid sports fan. Her favourite teams were the Raptors, Oilers, Roughriders, Blue Jays and Team Gushue. Eunice loved playing cards, especially crib. Coffee was always on and the cards were out ready to go. Some of the grandchildren grew up with addition skills and number recognition at a young age. Over the years, Eunice has knit more mitts, toques, socks, slippers, dresses, and sweaters than we are able to count. She also started doing diamond art and gifted pictures to her family and friends as well as donating pictures to the silent auction at the Birch Hills Museum, about 150 pictures in total. Last year when she heard that the hospital was in need of baby hats for premature babies she crocheted and donated over 100. The nurses were so very grateful to receive these tiny hats.
Eunice also loved flowers. She had a large flower and vegetable garden at the farm. When she moved into her house in Birch Hills she had many planters and hanging baskets, as well as pretty solar lights to light up the yard.
Visitation for Eunice is Sunday February 11, 2024 3 to 5 PM @ Mackenzie Chapel Prince Albert, SK. A Funeral for Eunice will be Monday February 12, 2024 @ 2:00PM held at Christ Alone Lutheran Church, Birch Hills, SK
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Birch Hills Memorial Museum, Birchview Home Auxiliary or a charity of your choice.
Eunice will be forever remembered and greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
