Elwin James Humphrey Stobbs
April 14, 1924 – December 25, 2014
STOBBS, Elwin James Humphrey, late of Birch Hills- It is with hearts full of memories that we announce his passing on Christmas day, surrounded by family at the age of 90 years. Elwin was born April 14, 1924 on the family farm South of Brancepeth, near Round Lake, SK. He was the only son of Oswald and Ann (nee Curle) Stobbs, raised on the farm, along with his four sisters. He attended school at Derby School. He was involved in hockey, baseball, golf and curling. Elwin married Irene Stamnes on October 20, 1948. Elwin farmed on the family farm with his father. Elwin and Irene had two children, a daughter Judy and son Brian. They purchased and lived on the farm at Round Lake until 1957 when the family moved to Birch Hills. Elwin worked eight years for Botham’s Hardware, then in 1965 Elwin and Irene purchased the store and re-named it Stobbs Hardware. His son Brian joined them in 1974, and Elwin and Irene worked until retirement, over 30 years, when Brian took over. They enjoyed summers at the family shack tent in Waskesiu. It was common for the three families who shared the shack tent to be there on the weekends with all three families staying comfortably in one room. Elwin, Pat and Norman would get up early to go golfing to avoid the morning rush. Elwin enjoyed golfing at the Birch Hills Golf Course and their many tournaments and also participating in the Lobstick Golf Tournament at Waskesiu. A highlight of his golf career was a hole in one on #2 at Waskesiu Golf Course in 1963. Elwin and Irene enjoyed spending time with their six grandchildren, as well as being snowbirds, taking trips with numerous relatives and friends to Arizona, British Columbia, Hawaii, trip to Alaska, and Eastern Canada, bringing back collected souvenirs for their grandchildren. Elwin served on Birch Hills’ Town Council, the Golf and Curling Clubs, Local School Board, Booster Club, coached ball and hockey teams, and was involved with the Birch Hills Business Association. Irene passed away in December 2004, and Elwin continued to reside in Birch Hills. He enjoyed coffee row at least once a day, and golf at the Birch Hills Golf Course. When he could no longer golf, he ‘assisted’ with the beer cart on Men’s Night. In the last two years, Elwin resided in the Weldon Country Villa. Elwin is survived by: His daughter Judy (Gene) Chorney of Gronlid, SK, and their children: Chelsea (Trent) Lasiuk of Swift Current, SK, Chad (Carley) Chorney and great-granddaughter Graycen of Prince Albert, SK, and Codie Chorney of Gronlid, SK; His son Brian (Bev) Stobbs of Christopher Lake, SK and their children Brooke (Wes) Quayle and great-grandsons Davis and Hudson of Airdrie, AB, Meagan Stobbs of Prince Albert, SK, and Whitney (Curtis) Stasiw and great-grandsons Nathaniel and Alexander of Prince Albert, SK; his sister Doreen Trevor of Oyen, AB; his sister-in-law Helen Hansen of Vancouver, B.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
