Elmer Malm
(November 19, 1919 – September 5, 2011)
Elmer was born on November 19, 1919 at home in the North Star District and passed away at Parkland Place on September 5, 2011.
Elmer was a twin to his sister Elsa, the eighth of nine children born to Erik August & Anna Karolina Malm. His educational years involved attending North Star School and also his spiritual training at the Brockington Mission Covenant Church led by Pastor John Bergstrom. Elmer took part in the choir and string band.
Times were quite difficult for families in those years so Elmer decided to join the work force to help out financially. He worked for farmers in the area and his Uncle Mandus and Aunt Anna in the Viking District. In 1955, his nephew David Sundelin, and himself decided to see the bright lights of Calgary where they were employed at the building of the Calgary airport, and the following year or so at the SarCee Army Barracks. He also worked in the Estevan area in the oil patch. Elmer was no stranger to hard work.
It was during this time he decided to purchase the home quarter from his mom and proceeded with clearing some of the land by hand. No small feat. Along with hard work, there were times of celebrations such as family get togethers for Mother's Day and Grandma Malm's birthday. Elmer would take out his guitar and sing; entertaining his many nieces and nephews.
He suffered a severe accident from an explosion, which at that time he decided to leave the farm and try out town living. In 1985 he purchased a house from Blaine and Diane Olson. He lived there until 1992. He then moved to Caskey Place; then on to Parkland in 1995 until his passing.
Left to cherish his memory are extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Erik & Anna Malm. Sisters Severina (Jonas “Oscar”) Loftdahl, Alfi (Hjalmer) Staff, Esther (Carl “Herman”) Lindbergh, Anna (Amandus) Sundelin, Ellen (James) Degerness, Elsa (Hjalmer) Anderson, Elvis (Nels “Folke”) Strinholm. One brother, Edwin (Blanche) Malm.
Funeral service was held Saturday, September 10, 2011 from the Chapel of Melfort Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Gary Gilkinson officiating. Interment followed at Mission Covenant Cemetery Brockington, SK.
