Ellen was born on December 6, 1914 on a farm near Lafleche, SK where she also attended school. When her parents moved to Prince Albert in 1934, she continued her studies at the Convent of Sion in Prince Albert. She also attended Business College and upon graduation, she was employed as a receptionist with Dr. Bigelow, until she married Pierre Jutras. Ellen devoted her life to raising her family. She accompanied her husband during his forty-seven years in Federal Corrections, living in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta and on his temporary assignments in Quebec, Ontario and Manitoba. During the years her husband was Warden of the Drumheller Institution, Ellen participated in many of the institutional social activities. She was well known and respected by both staff members and the inmate population. Ellen shared her husband’s love of music and loved to read. She enjoyed spectators’ sports and was an ardent tennis player. She met her husband on a tennis court. She was a lover of nature and spent many happy hours with her family at her Carwin Park Cottage, “Bye Bye Blues” at Emma Lake bird watching and enjoying the picturesque surroundings. Ellen was a fervent Roman Catholic and instilled in her family the importance of faith and prayer. She was an active member of the CWL at St. Mark’s Parish in Prince Albert and St. Anthony’s Parish in Drumheller. She trusted in God and had a great devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary, was an ardent supporter of the Society of The Little Flower (St. Thérèse of Liseux) and more recently was enrolled into the confraternity of the brown scapular with all the spiritual benefits of the Carmelite Order. In the fall of 2004, while visiting in Alberta, Ellen suffered a debilitating stroke. After a year of rehabilitation she returned home to Prince Albert where she has resided at Good Shepherd Villa until the time of her passing. To Pat, Renai and all the amazing staff of Good Shepherd Villa who cared for Mom during these past seven years, thank you for your compassion and excellent care. Ellen thought of all of you as her extended family. Good Shepherd Villa staff and friendly residents have truly been some of the many blessings in her life. You all held a special place in her heart. Good Shepherd Villa is truly a care home with a “big” heart. To Michelle, Linda and the palliative care team, thank you for your care, compassion and guidance during these past two weeks. You, along with Pat and her staff have made the last leg of Ellen’s journey special and so much easier to accept. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 23 from Sacred Heart Cathedral, 1401 – 4 Avenue West by Father Roque Concepcion.
