Ellen Ewert
1939 – 2025
After 86 years, Ellen was called to her heavenly home by her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Monday, October 20, 2025.
Ellen was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on September 17, 1939. She was the eldest of two daughters born to Mildred (Winterburn) Moore and Arthur “Bliss” Moore. As a child, she attended King George School and later Prince Albert Collegiate Institute, where she graduated at the age of 16. Ellen really wanted to study nursing, but her mother “thought it would be best” if she attended Park City Business College to become a secretary.
Ellen started working as a secretary with a mining exploration company in Prince Albert and transferred to La Ronge, where in May of 1957, she met her future husband, George Ewert. They wed on June 21, 1958, and over the next 16 years lived in La Ronge, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Waskesiu, and eventually returned to Prince Albert in 1974. They welcomed their daughter Susan, on August 7, 1965, and their son Brent, on March 6, 1970. Ellen worked various jobs over the years, where she developed friendships that would last a lifetime.
Ellen’s parents raised her in the Alder Baptist Mission church, and Ellen continued to attend church with her children and grandchildren, as she wanted to share her love of Jesus. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, volunteering in many positions, her latest being offering envelope secretary.
Ellen kept busy raising her children while George worked as a park warden in Prince Albert National Park. She provided her family with produce from her garden, and would plant many beautiful flowers to brighten the front and back yards. Many days were spent at their cabin at Candle Lake, where family and friends were always welcome.
She loved participating in curling and, in later years, watching the different tournaments, glued to the TV! She was an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider fan, often celebrating by text with family when there was a touchdown. Ellen took pleasure in travelling to Arizona while her parents wintered there; other trips to the United States, and one of her latest excursions was a bus trip to the East Coast. She loved reading Anne of Green Gables books and was over the moon to visit the Green Gables Heritage Place on Prince Edward Island and even dressed up as Anne.
Ellen will be missed by her daughter, Susan (Bruce) Wasylak; Granddaughters, Alicia Wasylak (Curtis Callioux) and Katarina Ewert (mother, Peggy Patzer); Grandsons, Michael (Sheridan) Wasylak and Connor Ewert (mother, Sara Ewert); great-grandson, Walker Wasylak; and sister, Florence (Ed) Drangsholt. Also mourning her loss are many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her church family.
Ellen was predeceased by her loving husband George in 2012; her son Brent in 2019; her father Bliss in 2003; and her mother Mildred, in 2020.
The family would like to thank the church members who arranged or brought meals and visited Ellen at her house over the last few years. Thank you to those who visited Ellen in the hospital and those who spent a few moments with her at the Rose Garden Hospice. Her family would also like to thank Dr. Surkan, Dr. James, Dr. Hildebrand and the countless nurses and staff who cared for Ellen at RUH, Victoria Hospital and Rose Garden Hospice.
A celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church on Wednesday, October 29, at 11:00 am. If you are unable to attend, the service will be live streamed on the First Baptist Church website www.fbcpa.net, on their Facebook page, as well as their YouTube Channel. All are welcome to join the family at Memorial Gardens for a brief graveside gathering. Lunch will be served immediately following the church service. The family would love everyone to stay for lunch, so they can connect with others whom Ellen cherished.
In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made in Ellen’s honour to the First Baptist Church, 1351 28th Street East, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 6T4, (306-764-5869) or Rose Garden Hospice, 500 38th Street West, Prince Albert, SK, S6V 8E4, rosegardenhospice.ca (306) 764-7673.
