FINNESTAD- Elizabeth “Betty”, It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Elizabeth (Betty) Doreen Finnestad, late of St. Louis, SK who passed away peacefully on April 17th, 2011 at Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert, SK. Betty was born September 3, 1929 in Saskatoon, SK to John & Violet (Bell) Potter. She grew up in the Hoey district and went to school in Hoey. She fondly remembered her school days and spoke often of her friends and the fun they had. Upon graduation she attended Business College in Prince Albert and found employment at the Bank of Montreal in Domremy. Seeking some excitement, she left rural life behind for a while by moving to Saskatoon and working at a School and Office supply company. She married Harold Finnestad on June 16th, 1956 and returned to live on a farm near Hoey. Soon after, they moved to their permanent residence East of St. Louis, where they farmed and raised their four children.
After Harold passed away in 1994, Betty found it difficult to be alone on the farm and she quickly found herself a home in the town of St. Louis. She enjoyed many days making a new home for herself and always had time to make supper for her son Ross. Ross predeceased mom in March of 1996, his passing was one of the most difficult roads she had to walk and many times she would say how her family and friends had been such a blessing. Betty enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, her afternoon soap operas, listening to and keeping up to date with music, and of course the dreaded Jeopardy. She also enjoyed company and was always happy when friends stopped in. She thoroughly enjoyed the many visits she had with her nieces and nephews and would fondly recall old and new stories. She could match wits with any young one and certainly kept the nursing staff on level 5 and level 6 on their toes until the very end.
Betty will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family; her two sons, Gordon (Alice) Finnestad of St. Louis, SK and Larry Finnestad of Fort Nelson, BC; her daughter Kathryn (Randy) Kary of Langham, SK; her grandchildren Michael Finnestad, Onile (Amanda) Finnestad, Laura Finnestad (Brent Babyak), Patrick Finnestad, Meghan Kary (Danny Krett) and Steven Kary; her great-grandchild Benjamin Finnestad. She also leaves to mourn her brother Jack (Rita) Potter of Hoey, SK; as well as many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many friends.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold, her son Ross, her sister and brother-in-law, Andy and Mame King and her parents John & Violet Potter.
The family offers special thanks to the care staff on Level 5 and Level 6 at the Victoria Union Hospital.
It is the family's request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
