Elie Charles Fleury

It is with deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Elie C Fleury of La Ronge, SK on Oct 25, 2023.
Elie passed away at home surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. Elie was born to Ralph and Mary Fleury in Binscarth, MB, on July 28, 1939. He attended Manitoba’s Teacher College in 1960. He began his teaching career the following year teaching grades 1-8 in a one room school. In 1963 Elie married the love of his life Therese McIvor. After they were married, Elie took a position with Indian Affairs and they moved to Little Grand Rapids, MB. Elie would go on to follow his passion for Aboriginal Education throughout the rest of his life. Elie received his bachelor of both Arts and Education at the University of Manitoba. He later obtained both his Post Graduate Degree and his Master’s Degree from The University of Saskatchewan. Elie moved his family to Prince Albert, SK in 1976 and he then began his career with the Northern Lights School Division. While with Northern Lights, Elie was a Superintendent for schools and eventually became the Director of Education. Elie also worked for the Cowessess First Nation and the Metis Federation of Saskatchewan for a time.
Elie and Therese eventually moved to La Ronge, SK where Elie worked as the Director of Education for the Northern Teacher Education Program (NORTEP). Elie retired from NORTEP in 2010. He later took the position of Resident Elder for Northlands College, where he remained until shortly before his death. Elie was twice presented with The Governor General of Saskatchewan Medal for his work in northern education and has also had the Cultural Center at Northlands College named.
Elie is survived by his wife, Therese; sons, Mark (Bev), Dwayne (Carla); daughter, Nicole (Wilf); grandsons, Derek (Crystal), Dylan (Sonya), Brendan (Jasmine), Liam; granddaughters, Marlyn (Stephan), Erin; great-grandsons, Decon, Dante, Rain, and Elie; siblings, Terry (Brenda), Don (Georgina), Doreen (Red), numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Elie was predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Mary Fleury; brothers, Stanley and Ken.
Aside from his love of aboriginal education, Elie was very passionate about the north. He loved being outdoors and especially loved to hunt and fish with his sons. Elie had a great love for his family, both immediate, extended, and honorary. His most recent joy was having his newest great-grandson named after him.
Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 581-9th St E, Prince Albert, SK. Memorial donations in Elie’s memory may be directed to Northlands College Scholarship Foundation, Box 650, La Ronge, SK S0J 1L0.
