Our father, Edwin Laird, passed away on Saturday, Feb 22, 2025, at the age of 101.
He was born May 5, 1923, in Verwood, SK. In 1934 the family moved north and started a homestead in Mayview, SK.
At age 18, he enlisted in the Canadian Army, serving across Sicily, Italy, France and Holland.
Dad was most proud that as a Signalman, on his 22nd birthday, he transmitted the official “All stations cease fire” order to artillery units signaling the end of combat in Europe.
The next year, while visiting a family of a fallen comrade in Prince Albert, he met Geraldine (Gerry) Coombe. They got married in Sept of 1948, and enjoyed 70 years of marriage, raising 3 children, Tom, Grant and Geri Lynn and loving their 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Dad leaves behind his cherished family, friends and countless others whose lives he touched with kindness, humor and unshakable resolve. He will be fondly remembered as a mentor, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend.
A private memorial will be held shortly with interment at a later date.
