Edward Calixte Brassard a Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather died Sunday September 1st 2013. He was born in the Hamlet of Albertville, Saskatchewan on September 25th1922. Ed was raised on the farm were he learned about hard work and the value of a dollar, which he instilled in his children and grandchildren. He was a provider to the core, he produced enough potatoes for the family that no one even considered going to a grocery store, instead there was a weekly “shopping” trip to Grandma and Grandpa's cold room. Ed always had time for his family, everyone of his grandchildren have fond memories of standing in front of his chair waiting for their butterscotch candy which he keep in the candy dish always with in his reach. Ed was a wonderful cook, his family dinners we not only a time to gather, but to enjoy his turkey stuffing and an amazing gravy, that never had a lump in it.
Ed enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served with 24th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery which was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during the Second World War. Later Ed became an active member of the Legion were he along with his wife Therese of 65 years, won numerous awards for their Canada Day yard displays. Ed was also rewarded with his life time membership with the Royal Canadian Legion. Ed worked from the Saskatchewan Department of Highways for 37 years and retired in1984. After retiring Ed then focused on many hobbies including gardening, curling and golf. Ed was very proud of his achievement of getting a hole-in-one.
Ed married Theresa McLachlan on October 23, 1947 and together they raised 6 children, and had 11 grandchildren and 18 Great-Grandchildren: Joesph (Linda Shynkaruk), Linda, Arthur (Deborah Isbister); Joeleene (Neil) Pullan. Joey (Karri Maier), Corey, Yvonne (Brian Alexander); Renee (Keith) Garrison, Tammy (Ryan) Akin, Jacqueline (Robert) Gaudet, Christena(Adam) Konrad, Lizanne Gobeil, Douglas (Lorraine Akers); Shannon (Keith Durie), Brent (Fallon Holowaty); Lawrence (Tracy Lindblad); Danniel, Chrystal Bjornson.
Ed is survived by his wife, and all of his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. His sister Marguerite Bastian and Sister-in-law's Genevieve Sherle, Cecile Brassard, Marie Brassard, Leona McLachan and Mrytle McLachan.
Ed was pre-deceased by his parents Emile and Melvine Brassard, his in-laws Lawrence and Clara McLachlan. His brothers and sisters: Lucile (Etienne) Joubert, Cleophos (Lucienne Gignac) Brassard, Elise (Alphonse) Beauchene, Ernest (Cecile Grimard) Brassard, Emile Brassard, Roland Brassard, Rita (Maurice) Beauchene, Robert (RoseHolodniuk) Brassard, Leo Brassard, Dorothy Brassard and Angre Bastien. His In-law: Elden (Fern Smythe) Mclachlan, Ethel (Bert) Thorsteinson, Edwin (Alma) McLachlan, Edna (Leo) Goodwin, Ernest McLachlan, Evelyn (Robin) Child, Cecil (Pearl Stoudt) McLachlan and Roy McLachlan.
Prayer Service will be held at St Marks Church Wednesday September4, 2013 at 7:00 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at St Marks on Thursday September 5, 2013 at 10:00 AM.
Officers and Members of the Royal Canadian Legion will confer Veterans Honours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion or Mount St. Joseph Nursing Home.
