Edna Demers (nee Stevenson), passed away peacefully at the age of 89 with her husband and her family by her side, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert, SK.
Edna was born October 19, 1935, in Shell Lake, SK. She married Medard Demers on August 26, 1963, lived most of her life in Debden, and enjoyed retirement at Morin Lake in Victoire, SK. Their two married daughters and grandchildren have kept her very busy during her life.
She began her teaching career at Big River First Nations with the Grade 5 students. After a while, she was hired in Debden to teach in the elementary division and soon moved to the high school division.
Edna was a sports enthusiast who was involved in numerous events, either playing or coaching. Along with a few other ladies in Debden, Edna established the “Debden Roadrunners” women’s broomball team that still exists today.
She loved hockey and followed “her boys” that were previous students as they played on the men’s “Debden Jets” hockey team. She followed all of their games over the years and would travel to various towns wherever the team was playing. She also followed her grandson Logan Collins across the province cheering him on as he shared her love of sports and participated in everything.
Edna also loved figure skating. She began the Debden Figure Skating Club along with Dr. Malowski and Toody Turner. She was happy to follow her daughter Darla and then her granddaughter Meaghan through their levels of skating. She also travelled frequently to Saskatoon to watch the sports and events her grandchildren Aidan and Emma participated in.
She was a fantastic decorator and was involved with the Debden Winter Carnival for numerous years as she provided the decorations for the figure skating shows. She was also heavily involved with the high school drama with directing, stage decoration, and actor makeup and wardrobe. In her retirement, she joined the Victoire Parish décor committee, in which she made banners, floral arrangements, and anything else that was needed for the Church functions.
For many years Edna’s summers consisted of helping her dear friend Helene Boutin process the registrations for swimming lessons at Morin Lake. This also became her favorite time of the year as all her grandchildren would come stay with her to take their swimming lessons for two weeks. She was overjoyed to meet her two great-granddaughters who were born in November 2024 and sang lullabies as well as took many pictures with them.
Edna is survived by her husband, Medard Demers of Morin Lake, SK; her daughters Lori (Ernest) Collins of Debden, Darla (Danny) Lambe of Saskatoon; her grandchildren Meaghan (Scott) Kristoffersen and daughter Peyton of Prince Albert, Logan (Michaela) Collins and daughter Ellie of Debden, Emma Bessette of Saskatoon, Aidan Bessette of saskatoon.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Harry and Elizabeth Stevenson; four brothers, three sisters, one nephew, one sister-in-law, 2 two brothers-in-law, and a daughter.
A Catholic Mass will be held on February 1, 2025, at 1:00 pm at St. Jean Baptiste Church in Debden, SK. A private interment will take place at a later date.
