Earl Howard Jewitt, late of the RM of Shellbrook, SK, passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert on Monday, September 21, 2026, surrounded by family.
Earl was born on March 11, 1932, in Wembley, Alberta, the only son of Howard and Olefa Jewitt. In 1934, the family returned to Shellbrook, SK, where he grew up and attended school. Raised on the family farm, he developed a lifelong love of the land and farming.
He met Ruth Sonnenberg in 1955. They fell in love and married in 1958. After working away for several years – first in Humboldt, SK, and later in Cadillac, SK – an opportunity arose to rent land and farm with his dad. Earl returned to Shellbrook, SK, in 1964 with Ruth, Janine and Lorene, their two eldest daughters.
He had tremendous drive and a strong work ethic, and he had a goal to farm his own land. He worked as an electrician, rented land, and later gained ownership of the home place. During this time Kirsten and Erin their two youngest daughters were born. Earl continued farming until his retirement in 2001 and remained on the farm until his passing.
The farm was more than a place to him—it was his home, his livelihood, and a source of great pride. It was also the place where he and Ruth built their life and raised their family. He leaves a wonderful legacy behind.
Earl was much more than a hard-working farmer. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; a skilled handyman, a problem solver, and a true “jack of all trades” with a vast and diverse wealth of knowledge. He loved to learn and he loved to laugh. He was always active and very fit, even into his 90’s. He never needed to be the center of attention to make an impact. He was humble and unpretentious. He gave people the benefit of the doubt. He was grateful for simple things and quietly lived his life — working, fixing things, reading, learning, laughing, staying active, and loving his family.
Earl will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Ruth; daughter, Janine and her sons, Nolan and Aidan Merryweather; daughter Lorene; daughter Kirsten; daughter Erin, her husband Todd Black, and their sons, Ryersen and Marshall Black; as well as his extended family and many friends.
He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Olefa Jewitt; his sisters Alice Gelinas and Elaine Gatzke; and his son-in-law Garth Merryweather.
Earl’s Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Shellbrook, SK.
