McHARG, Douglas
(January 19, 1937 – June 30, 3011)
The family of Douglas McHarg wish to announce his passing on June 30th, 2011 at St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon. After a valiant effort to curtail his diabetes, it was relentless and he died of complications suddenly and unexpectedly in St. Paul's Hospital. Doug was born on January 19th, 1937 in Melfort and passed away on June 30th at the age of 74.
He was predeceased by his parents Alex and Margaret McHarg, a brother Lyle (Lucy), a brother Bud, infant sister Inez and brother in law Joe Ell.
Doug grew up on the family farm at Lenvale and completed his schooling in Fairy Glenn. Doug's mode of travel to school in the winter was Pepper and toboggan. Pepper was his horse that he really loved. In summer he would bike the two miles to the school in Fairy Glenn. After leaving school his fist venture was working in a bank, but being an outdoors-y type of person, he switched his career and joined SaskPower. This took him to several areas in the province including Weyburn, Melville, Wakaw, Blaine Lake, Uranium City and Prince Albert. Doug retired after many years with SaskPower.
Doug was married to Joyce Aasen, a school mate and they lived in different areas depending where his job took him. They finally settled in Prince Albert. Doug loved the north and in 1991 he built a cabin on the shore of Lac La Ronge at Napatak. He bought a boat and so spent may hours on the lake fishing. Often he would travel north to Stanley Mission and other northern areas enjoying the scenery and Mother nature; always with his fishing rod and reel handy. In his cabin he spent many hours looking out his huge front window, checking the weather.
Doug is survived by his wife Joyce, his sons Garth (Nancey) and their children Dax & Madison, Scot (Sherry) children Jessica, Matthew & Adam, Hugh (Debbie) and their children Morgan, Amanda & Lindsey and one sister Velma Ell of Shellbrook.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, July 23, 2011 from the Chapel of Melfort Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. with Major Michael Hoeft officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Memorial contributions, in memory of Doug, may be directed to Canadian Diabetes Association. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Melfort Funeral Home Ltd. of Melfort, SK. (306)-752-2714. www.melfortfuneralhome.com
