Douglas Arthur Horner 1945- 2026
Douglas was born on January 11, 1945, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to Lloyd and Helene Horner (née Perrin). He was raised on a farm near Blaine Lake, with five siblings, where his childhood was filled with sports, hunting, fishing, camping, caring for animals, and other chores. From a young age, Douglas had a special connection with animals and was known for tending to injured or sick livestock whenever he could. Those early experiences shaped a lifelong love of animals, the outdoors, and a strong work ethic that remained with him throughout his life.
Douglas married Valerie Wiebe, and together they moved to Air Ronge, Saskatchewan, where Douglas spent the next 15 years working for the government developing various agricultural projects throughout the north. Their children, Jeff and Lisa Horner, were born during this time.
Douglas was a strong, caring, and loving father who would give a stranger the shirt off his back. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, and spending time outdoors. Some of his happiest moments were spent at his cabin at Pinehouse Lake, where he enjoyed fishing, the beauty of the northern wilderness, and making memories with family and friends.
In 1996, the family moved to a farm near Prince Albert. Douglas was an entrepreneur at heart and was always dreaming up new business ventures and opportunities, including wild rice and fish farming. He was a man of ideas, determination, and optimism who was never afraid to pursue a new challenge. His love of animals extended to the farm, where he enjoyed having deer and buffalo and took great pride in caring for them until a severe stroke compromised his health.
Douglas was a proud father and devoted grandfather. His granddaughter, Brooklynn, was a special source of joy in his life. He had an immense love for his children, and his face would light up whenever they walked into the room. He was incredibly proud of his children and always had their backs, no matter the circumstances. His love and support for his family were unwavering and unconditional.
Douglas will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humour, love of family, and enduring connection to the land. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, perseverance, and unconditional love that will continue to live on in all who knew him.
In his later years, Douglas was fortunate to remain in the comfort of his own home thanks to the unwavering love, dedication, and support of his children, with Valerie continuing to offer support when needed. For many years, Jeff and Lisa played an instrumental role in their father’s care, helping him navigate the challenges of aging while ensuring he could continue living on the farm he loved. Through countless appointments, daily support, and quiet acts of kindness, they were a constant presence in his life. Douglas rarely complained and faced life’s challenges with strength, determination, and dignity. The family takes comfort in knowing that he was able to remain at home, where he most wanted to be, particularly because of Jeff’s commitment and devotion.
Douglas is lovingly remembered by his children, Jeff and Lisa Horner; his beloved granddaughter, Brooklynn; his siblings, Robert (Vera) Horner, Valorie (Elvin) Falkenberg, Caroline (Bob) Dancey, and Barbara (Ray) Hart; his sister-in-law, Lucille; his former wife, Valerie Wiebe, the mother of his children; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Lloyd and Helene Horner; his infant sister, Carol, who died at birth; and his older brother, Wayne Horner.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Prince Albert Home Care staff for the exceptional care, compassion, and support they provided to Douglas. Their kindness and dedication helped him maintain his independence and quality of life, and their care will always be remembered and appreciated.
Forever loved, always remembered, and deeply missed.
