Doug Salen
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Doug Salen on January 2, 2023.
Doug was the son of Reider and Margaret Salen, and was raised on their farm in the Iranistan District, a few miles northeast of Birch Hills.
Doug attended high school in Weldon and upon graduation, pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a teacher.
His first teaching position was in a one-room rural school in the Fisher School Division in 1959. He subsequently taught for two years in Kinistino, and then completed his teaching career in the Prince Albert Public School System. Doug also taught piano and voice to various students throughout his career. He was also the organist and choir director in several churches in Prince Albert.
Doug always had a passion for classical choral music and entered many school choirs in the Saskatchewan Music Festival.
Doug also had a pronounced fondness for race horses, and took pride in a thoroughbred colt that he raised on his acreage, and successfully raced at Marquis Downs in Saskatoon and Exhibition Park in Regina.
Doug will be missed by his pal, Ed Sebjanic, and he was always grateful for his small circle of friends, and for those relatives who cared about him. He especially cherished a niece who was always “there” when he needed someone to talk to and perhaps get some needed advice.
We will remember Doug and inter his ashes at 11:00 a.m., on June 9, 2023, at Lake Park Cemetery, Five miles east of Hwy 3 on Lake Park Road (NE of Birch Hills). Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of River Park Funeral Home, (306) 764-2727, Michelle Brown, Funeral Director.
