Dorothy “Maizie” Irene (Shillington) LaClaire
1919-2013
Mrs. Dorothy “Maizie” Irene LaClaire was born August 31, 1919 in Delisle, SK on the farm of her grandparents in the Avondale district. She attended Avondale School. Her parents moved to Saskatoon when Maizie was 8 years old, during her time in Saskatoon she attended four different schools. The family then moved to Bay Trails, SK (10 miles south of Humboldt, SK ) later settling in Shellbrook, SK. Maizie married Louis LaClaire on October 30, 1939. They began their married life farming in the Rozalee district, later moving to Rayside, SK and finally settling in Shellbrook, SK. They farmed together for 30 years, selling the farm in 1973. Upon retirement they enjoyed many Bus Tours. Maizie has been a resident in Big River, Spiritwood, Leask, and Shellbrook Care Homes. Maizie will be lovingly remembered by her children, Dorothy Person of Shellbrook, SK, Joyce (Frank) Roggeveen of Edmonton, AB, Delores (Larry) Nordell of Wetaskiwin, AB, Fred (Sandra) LaClaire of Regina, SK, Ken (May Louise) LaClaire of Edmonton, AB; her daughter-in-law Kim LaClaire of Calgary, AB; her 16 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren; 2 great great great grandchildren; her siblings, Lorraine Schmidt of Saskatoon, SK, Glady’s (Jim) McKay of Coquitlan, B.C., Jean (Ken) Olson of Saskatoon, SK, Alex Shillington of Edmonton, AB, Ray Shillington of Victoria, B.C., Doug (Bonnie) Shillington of Vernon, B.C., her close friends Ed (Velma) Stringer of Prince Albert, SK, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. Maizie was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Louis LaClaire, her son Gordon LaClaire, her granddaughter Shelley Nordell, her daughter in-law Sharon LaClaire, her son in-law Lorne Person, her parents Merrill & Pearl Shillington, her brother Earl Shillington, her sisters in-law Marilyn Shillington & Fedora Shillington, and her brother- in-law Arnold Schmidt. Family and friends were very important to Maizie, she was loved by many, and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. The Funeral Service for Maizie was held on October 10, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from Knox United Church in Shellbrook, SK, with Pastor Dave Whalley as officiant. Interment was held in the Shellbrook Cemetery. Special music was done by Pat Sonntag, and Maizie’s great grandchildren. Fred LaClaire shared memories of Maizie, and Jason, Bradley, Kevin and Mark LaClaire acted as urn bearers. The Parkland Integrated Health Centre Care Home staff and residents acted as an honor guard for Maizie. In lieu of tributes, donations may be made in memory of Maizie to the Parkland Integrated Health Centre “Care Home”.
