Dorothy (Dot) Holmes was born on July 8, 1926, in Young Saskatchewan to Thomas and Elizabeth Atkinson. The family of 8 lived and farmed outside of Young. Dot’s dad was an accomplished musician so he always made sure that all 5 children learned how to play a musical instrument and would play music daily. Dot was always grateful for her musical talent. Her favorite musical instrument to play was the accordion and her music filled the rooms of many a house party, family get-togethers and community events. After her husband Cliff’s passing, Dot enjoyed playing music with her special friend Arnold Gunderson. Even during Dot’s last years at the long-term care at Parkland Integrated Health Centre, she would play the keyboard in her room or strike up an occasional tune on the piano in the recreation area. Music brought great joy to mom and others throughout her life.
Before getting married Dot worked as a nurses’ aid at the Holy Family Hospital, the Nokomis Union Hospital and the Grey Nun’s Hospital in Regina. She also worked at the Empress Hotel in Victoria in housekeeping.
Dot met Clifford Holmes while in Regina. They were married in Regina on November 21, 1944. Cliff was an army staff sergeant stationed there. After Cliff was discharged from the army in April 1946, they moved to the Three Creeks area outside of Shellbrook and farmed for 5 years. Then they moved to Prince Albert, Shellbrook and then to Marchant Grove, where they farmed and enjoyed life with their 5 children. Mom was active in farm life, doing fieldwork, tending to the large garden and yard, milking cows and helping raise livestock. In 1981 they retired to Shellbrook, where they enjoyed many years together golfing, curling, camping, travelling and spending time with friends, family and grandchildren. They had 54 wonderful years together.
Dot sold her house in Shellbrook and lived in different locations that could accommodate her senior years: the Senior cottages in Shellbrook, Caleb Village in Prince Albert, Mihilewicz Assisted Living Care Home and Parkland Integrated Health Centre long term care in Shellbrook. There were so many special, caring people in these facilities that made mom’s golden years pleasant and comfortable.
Dorothy is lovingly remembered by her daughters: Linda Holmes, Sheila Larson (Wayne), Donna Holmes (Arthur Monus) and Rhonda Martin (Randy) and her 9 grandchildren: Duane, Billie-Joe, Krystal, Clifford, Ian, Ronald, Tisa, Candice and Trent; her 6 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Elizabeth Atkinson, her husband Clifford and son Dale, siblings: Ella (Arthur), Tommy (Muriel), James (Mae), Ray (Pat) and Roy.
Dot enjoyed a life well lived and will be forever loved and missed. A private family gathering will be held at a future date in remembrance. The family requests no flowers or donations.
