1938-2019
Doris Wreford died peacefully with family by her side on July 3, 2019. She was born on October 13, 1938, and grew up in Big River. Doris had a varied nursing career. She worked at the Shellbrook hospital, Lakewood Lodge in Big River as Director of Care, for Home Care in Canwood and surrounding communities, as well as the Spiritwood Nursing home. She provided summer relief at the Prince Albert and Canwood Co-operative Health Centres, and then worked at Ahtahkakoop Reserve as the coordinator of the Home Care Program. Doris retired from nursing, for health reasons, in 2006 at the age of 69 after over 45 years of nursing. Doris was very community-minded and participated in many organizations such as the Canwood Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Canwood Legion, Canwood and District Donor’s Choice, Whispering Pine Place Auxiliary, Canwood School Board, Canwood and Prince Albert Community Clinic Boards, and Canwood and District 4-H club as project and general leader. Doris was the chairperson for Canwood’s 75th-anniversary celebrations. She served two terms on council of the Saskatchewan Registered Nurses Association. Doris was the oldest of 7 children. Doris met Bruce, her future husband in Loon Lake in 1956, and were married on April 22, 1961. By December of 1965, they had completed their family of three boys.
Doris is lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Bruce; her children Dannie, Terry (Dawn) and their children Carter and Gillian; John (Sherri) and their children, Denon, Dallas and Amy; her siblings Bud (Grace) Forbes, Grace Cromartie, Gladys Rudolph, Ken Forbes (Cindy McLean) and Lorrie Forbes (Earl Stewart); sister-in-law, Amy Grant; as well as numerous other relatives. Doris was predeceased by her parents Jim and Georgena Forbes; her brother Don Forbes and numerous other relatives.
A Celebration of Doris’ life was held on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the Canwood Legion Hall. Internment at the Canwood North Cemetery. Memorial donations in Doris’ memory may be made to the Kidney Foundation, or to the choice of the donor.
