It is with immense sadness the family of Doris Toporowski announce her passing on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at the age of 84 years. Doris was born at Rose Valley, SK to Del and Eula Strand. Throughout her lifetime Doris lived in many towns in Saskatchewan and British Columbia. In 1957 she met and married Eugene Toporowski and they made their home in Paddockwood, SK. During their years in Paddockwood they farmed and ran the local telephone exchange. Two children were born to Doris and Eugene- daughter Sheryl and son Randell. In 1974, dial service was introduced and Doris accepted a position at SaskTel in Prince Albert. The farm was sold and they moved to Prince Albert where Eugene worked for Kinsmen Community Workshop. Doris continued to work at SaskTel as a telephone operator until July, 1997. In September, 1997, Eugene died unexpectedly and Doris made the decision to move to Nanaimo. In 2005, Doris moved back to Regina, where her daughter and son were living. At that time, Doris went back to work for Safeway and worked in the Bakery department until her official retirement at age 80! Throughout Doris’s life, she was known and loved by so many – family, friends and dogs. She was on the go all the time and she especially loved when it was curling season. Doris curled throughout her life but in her senior years her biggest thrill was watching Brad Gushue win and getting to meet him in person. When the games became too tense for her, out came the ironing board and she would iron to help her nervousness. She learned to love Roughrider football and many times the ironing board came out for that too. Doris loved to travel and with her family spent many vacations travelling across Canada and the United States. She was also known to play a mean King’s Cribbage game and she and her son-in-law always were trying to best each other to see who could win. She enjoyed Bingo and playing with her granddaughter – Sarah – as her Bingo partner. During her last year of life, Doris lived at College Park I Senior’s Residence in Regina and took part in many activities so she could earn her “funny money” and bid on the silent auction. Family was everything to Doris. She loved her children and grandchildren with a passion, Eugene’s brothers and sisters, her many cousins and was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews. Friends became family to Doris, and she was known by Grandma to so many. Doris was predeceased by her husband Eugene; parents Del and Eula; granddaughter Amanda; and a number of other family members. She leaves to mourn her daughter and son, their spouses, grandchildren and many other loved family members. She will be terribly missed by the friends she met along the way who also became part of her family circle. A Service Honouring her Life will be held at Regina Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4001 East Victoria Avenue, Regina, SK on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Those wishing to view a live stream of the service, please log onto https://fweb.tv/107225.
