Schwehr – Doris

1931 – 2020

Doris Josephine (Anderson)Schwehr was born on August 21, 1931, at Marchant Grove. She was one of eight children born to Andrew and Siri Anderson.  She grew up on the farm at Marchant Grove and attended school at Silver Cliff until Grade 10, she took Grade Eleven and Twelve in Shellbrook. When she finished high school, she attended Normal School in Saskatoon.

Mom’s first teaching job was at Blue Heron School, where she boarded with Jens and Sigrid Anderson.  Mom also taught at Three Creeks, Silver Cliff, Briarlea, Foxdale, Cookson, and Canwood. She loved teaching and loved her students. She said she was influenced by her Aunt Doris, who was also a teacher. She remembered how Aunt Doris had a way of making each person feel special, even children. Based on comments from previous students, that is what Mom did as well, made everyone feel special.

Mom and Dad were married on July 20, 1954. They lived at Sugar Hill, raising their four children on the farm; it was a good place to grow up. Mom was a busy farmer’s wife and also taught off and on. Sugar Hill was a very close-knit community and mom had many good friends there. One of her favorite occasions for many years was the Christmas Caroling party that they hosted for many years. Everyone in the community was invited and everyone in the family was recruited to clean the shop or the school, check the lights on the tree, make the special ornaments she gave out and help with the food.

 In 2005 Mom and Dad moved their house into town and now there was even more time for visitors. She liked having people drop in for coffee and it wasn’t unusual for her to whip up a cake as she visited with people so she would have something to serve with coffee. Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling and camping, especially spending time at their site at Fish Lake. 

Mom moved into Whispering Pine Place in October of 2018. She was very happy there; she loved the staff, being with the other residents, the activities, and especially the bus trips.

 Mom was involved in many activities. She was a 4-H leader, taught Sunday school, VBS and confirmation. She was a dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as a member of the ELW for many years. Mom was also a very active member of the Whispering Pine Place Auxiliary, even attending meetings after she became a resident there. Mom loved playing cards and was always willing to drop everything for a game of Canasta.  She also enjoyed reading, Crossword Puzzles, Jigsaw Puzzles, and talking on the phone.

Mom would have said her greatest treasure was her family. She was very supportive of her children and proud of whom we had become. Mom was so excited when she became a grandmother.  She was never happier than when one or more of her grandchildren or great-grandchildren were around;  she was a very special lady to each one, spending time baking, sewing, gardening, telling stories, playing cards or board games, building forts, playing hide and seek or whatever game the kids wanted to play. Mom gave her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren two great gifts, her unconditional love and her faith in a loving and merciful God. We will miss you Mom.

Doris will be lovingly survived by, her children: Sandra (Ron) Willner of Canwood, SK, and their children: Steven (Shannon) Willner and children, Shae, Sethen, Shya; Michael (Claudia) Willner; Shannon Willner; Dale (Marsha) Schwehr of Canwood, SK and their children: Richard (Corrine) Schwehr and son, Anders; Lindsey (Emery) Hamborg and children, Reese, Lincoln; Russell (Colleen) Schwehr of Canwood, SK, and daughter: Nicole (Carey); Susan (Darcy) Coleman of Leduc, AB, and their children: Brent (Jessica Swann), Adam (Germilyn) Coleman, Karalene (Greg Sweetnam); her sister, Ruth Gjerde; her sisters-in-law, Fay Anderson, Carlene Anderson, Doris Person; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Doris was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Schwehr; her parents, Andrew and Siri Anderson; her brothers, Ture (Florence), Alf, Hans, Erik; her sisters, Sigrid (Clifford) Baron, Helen Anderson; her parents in law, Joe and Annie Schwehr; her sister-in-law, Laura (Ted) McAndrew; and her brother-in-law, Wayne Person.

There was a private family service held for Doris. In lieu of tributes, memorial donations may be made in memory of Doris to either the Zion Lutheran Church in Canwood or to the Canwood & Districts Bus Association.  Doris was laid to rest in the Sturgeon River Cemetery.
