DOREEN WOOD
July 13, 1920 – September 15, 2013

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Doreen Wood, September 15, 2013. Doreen is survived by her children Carol (Lyle), Darlene (Jim), Janet (Jack), Lynn (Michael), Meryl (Larry), Guy (Sharon), Scott (Donna); 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; her brothers Clifford (Vera) and Raymond (Nellie); as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Edgar, her husband of 72 years; infant daughter Jeanne; her parents Fern and William McCreight; sisters Leila and Edna; brothers Archie, Arthur, Earl, Lloyd, and Gerald.
Doreen was born on a farm near Vidora Saskatchewan, the 4th child in the McCreight Family, and lived there until she was 13 when the family moved north to homestead at Ladder Valley. The family’s epic trek was a fascinating story. She attended school at Ladder Valley and later worked in the community. She met Edgar, the love of her life, at a Valentines Box Social. After their marriage they moved to Prince Albert where they resided for many years, raising their family.
Thrift was necessary and she was a resourceful woman. While raising 7 children she grew and preserved vegetables, canned fruits, prepared nutritious meals, baked delicious goodies and all the wonderful bread her family ate. Her cinnamon buns were legendary. She sewed most of the children’s clothing, knitted sweaters and mitts and kept everyone looking neat and nicely dressed. Additionally, in her mid-thirties, she enrolled in night classes at Prince Albert Business College and subsequently taught there. She is fondly remembered by her many students. Later she took an office position in Prince Albert with the Federal Department of Agriculture. Edgar and Doreen where transferred to Regina, where she became the Office Manager at the Health of Animals Office. Her mind was always active, and she strongly encouraged her children in their studies. She had a great interest in world events and closely followed Canadian politics.
Doreen was instrumental in the establishment of Nisbett Memorial United Church where she was pianist, organist and choir leader for many years. She was active with UCW. After retirement she helped establish Candle Lake Community Church and again provided music for the services.
Doreen and Edgar retired to Candle Lake where they lived for 26 years. As young retirees they again became involved in community activities. They participated in Candle Lake Seniors Club and helped organize community activities such as Sask100. Doreen served on the council of the Resort Village of Candle Lake including two terms as Mayor. They enjoyed travel and had several interesting trips, both national and international. She loved to play cards of any kind but especially enjoyed Bridge at which she excelled.
They bought a home in P.A. in 2007 where they lived until Edgar’s death. We are thankful to Prefontaine Homes in Shellbrook and Kopera Homes in Prince Albert for their care and support over the past year. Celebration of Doreen’s Life will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 20th at Gray’s Funeral Chapel, 575 – 28th Street West, Prince Albert with Reverend Nora Vedress officiating. Lunch will follow. Interment will take place in a private family ceremony at Candle Lake. In lieu of other tributes, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
