DONNA BACKSTROM
October 15, 1926 ~ June 4, 2020
Donna Backstrom passed peacefully on June 4, 2020 in the ICU at Victoria Union Hospital in Prince Albert, SK with her family by her side.
Donna was born in Weyburn, SK to Dr. Charles and Mary Morphy. She grew up in Melfort, SK and attended her schooling there until her graduation. During that time Donna, her sister Doris and brother Herb spent many summers in the shack tent at Waskesiu Lake, SK. She had many fond memories from that time with her family. Shortly after graduating high school in Melfort, she went on to University to become a lab technician and then worked in the Melfort Union Hospital for a number of years. She then took on a chance of a lifetime and went to nurse in Bermuda. She stayed there until she told us she was home sick and needed to come back to Saskatchewan. She worked in Prince Albert for a time before meeting the love of her life, Bert Backstrom and they were married in 1965. In 1971 Donna quit work to become a full time mother and house wife, moved to Nipiwan, SK, then to Hudson Bay, SK and finally back to Prince Albert.
Donna never lost the love of the lake from when she was a child. She spent 38 years in the trailer with dad at Sunnyside Emma Lake. She loved every minute of the lake life, fishing, swimming, sitting on the deck and visiting with anyone that would lend an ear. Donna was a lifetime member of the Royal Purple Elks, an organization which she was very proud of and believed in whole heartedly. She was also a very active member in the United Church in Prince Albert until her health kept her away.
Donna is survived by her son Todd Backstrom (Leslie), her granddaughter Morgan Backstrom, her nephews and niece. As well as numerous cousins and friends.
Donna is pre-deceased by her parents Charles and Mary Morphy, her husband Bert Backstrom her sister Doris and Don Holtsman and her brother Herb Morphy.
Due to Donna’s final wishes, no funeral will be held. In lieu of other tributes donations can be made to the Royal Purple Elks foundation for children. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306) 922-4729.
