Born December 2, 1945 in Unity, Saskatchewan, Don “Donnie” Ruben Orr was known for his kindness, patience, love and loyalty (and being a bit of a brat).
Don was predeceased by his beloved mother, Mary Repin, and his little brother, Kim Repin. We’ve heard many stories about how mischievous he was as a child and how he was a going concern for his mom, who used to put him in a harness because he would run off to ride the escalators. He missed Kim and often spoke about their shared loves – baseball and family.
Don is survived by his sisters, Pam (Al) Porter and Karen (Brent) Repin Skrocki. As a youngster, Don took a bit too much delight in tormenting Pam. As we hear it, he would lock her out of the house after school. If Pam got home first, he would run back and forth across the roof to distract her, climb in a window, and shove her out the door. Thank you Pam, for letting him live. Karen was quite a bit younger so was saved from little Donnie’s antics. She did have to deal with his daughters’ shenanigans when she babysat, though. Thank you Karen, for being so kind and sweet – and letting us live.
Don had three daughters: Leah, Terri and Dana, who will always argue about who was Dad’s favourite but know that he loved each of us unconditionally, through our best and worst times. He quietly coached and rooted for us and always had some wisdom to offer if we asked. We are honoured and blessed to call him Dad.
His four grandchildren, Nadika, Corbyn, Breck and Hudsyn were very dear to his heart and they loved him fiercely in return. They called him “Fall Asleep Grandpa” because he was a champion napper who could nap anywhere at any time. He could even nap through baseball and curling, which he loved to watch, but even more to play.
Playing ball and curling took him on the road a lot and Don sure did love a good road trip. Highlights for him were to watch his son-in-law, Blair Morgan, race motocross and snowcross across Canada and the US. Camping and annual fishing trips in northern Saskatchewan with his brothers-in-law were among his favourite things to do.
Don enjoyed his decades-long career with the Prince Albert Catholic School Division: both the people he worked with and the schools and students he represented.
Don loved the people in his life with his whole heart. As a family, we express love by teasing each other, and Don could give it as well as he could take it. He enjoyed holidays and special occasions filled with banter and laughs between aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings. He was proud of everyone’s success and relished in their happiness.
“Fall Asleep Grandpa” took his last nap on April 9, 2023. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched. As we write this obituary, we can hear him say his favourite groan-inducing dad joke: “You may think it’s funny but it’s snot.”
