Prevention Director
SUMMARY
The Director of Prevention Services for Sturgeon Lake First Nation is responsible for the management, strategic planning, budgeting, and implementation of programs that support intervention, student wellness, family unity and sobriety.
The goals are to develop programming that assists children, youth, and families to live within their cultural traditions which results in increased strength and resiliency. This role will take a holistic approach to developing effective strategies to meet the emotional, psychological, physical, and social support needs of the community.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Programming
- Participate in the selection, training and evaluation of program employees.
- Work with SLFN agencies to establish a clear understanding of the Nation’s current services and identify areas of need (gap analysis).
- Establish a prevention team to support the identified gaps and implement required prevention activities.
- Prevent the duplication of prevention services across agencies.
- Collaborate with internal and external organizations to share information, trends, best practices, and lessons learned
- Manage and approve all prevention budgets.
- Provides leadership in developing and delivering services that promote inclusion, participation, creativity, and empowerment to build a vibrant community where safety and physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being are supported
- Promotes and interweaves the SLFN culture, traditions, language, vision, mission, and values throughout the development and implementation of programming through interagency collaboration and guidance of Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers
- Supports in the development, implementation, and evaluation of workshops, camps, and group programming that incorporate an understanding of the Nation’s rich history and knowledge through land-based activities, language development, and community programming
- Models effective community engagement, conflict resolution, facilitation, and crisis intervention skills in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team context
- Adhere to SLFN policies and procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in training and professional development relevant to duties.
- Be approachable and open to membership suggestions/concerns.
ADMINISTRATION
- Ensure an appropriate filing system is in place to track the progress of activities and programming from development through to completion and implementation
- Advocating for program dollars from various funding streams/sources.
- Evaluate prevention activities, programs, and services.
- Creates an inventory of program assets (recreational items, technology, physical assets, etc.)
- Gathers all relevant data required for annual prevention reporting such as activity/program details, summaries, statistics, outcomes and indicators
- Supports the appropriate team members to compile all required reporting.
- Perform other related duties as required by the Director of Operations
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Develop knowledge of government agencies and other groups which may provide funding and resources to the Nation.
- Good communication skills including the ability to deal courteously and decisively with all members and staff.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Excel, and other software programs which assist in providing better service to the Nation.
- Ability to establish priorities, work plans, and work independently.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in job related area, MSW considered an asset
- 3-5 year Management Experience
- A motivated and approachable individual
- A collaborative critical thinker and problem solver
- Cultural understanding of First Nations
- Strong communication skills
- Fluent in Cree is an asset.
- Basic understanding of applicable legislation
- Understanding how Nations work on and off reserve, governance, and child welfare.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Strong understanding of how to develop, maintain, and monitor budgets.
- Excellent reporting skills (tracking of deliverables and outcomes)
- Proposal writing experience.
- Demonstrated ability to deal with sensitive information in a professional and tactful manner.
- Living and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
- Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record Check
- Valid drivers license and access to a reliable vehicle.
