Diana Roden
1940 ~ 2025
Diana Louise Roden, a proud farmer, nurturing teacher, and gallant protector of nature, passed away in her sleep on the morning of January 23, 2025. She had been an inspirational teacher to all of her students over the years, including in many First Nation communities such as Piapot and Pelican Narrows. She also worked as a substitute teacher in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division in the mid 1990’s, after her full-time “job” of being her mother’s caregiver came to an end.
Diana did love to learn, and she took a few evening educational counselling courses at SIAST under Connie Gerwing to expand her knowledge of the human mind. Diana was one of the first women in the district who ran her farm on her own for roughly 40 years. Although she had a very quiet demeanor, she could stand bravely when needed, such as the time she and another female neighbour helped to free a young fawn, who got tangled up in her page-wire fencing. Once the two women got the fawn untangled from the wire, the fawn sensibly hopped back into the forested area on Diana’s farm.
Diana was also a brilliant writer, and co-wrote the script for the short film Finding Margaret alongside her daughter Marjorie. It was for a Canada wide 48-hour filmmaking competition, and the two were pleasantly surprised when they earned the top prize. Even so, Diana remained humble, which was a trait she learned from her father, Berent “Louie” Johnson.
Diana will be missed by all who knew her, and especially so by her daughter, Marjorie Roden. Thank you for being the best of role models to not only your daughter, but also to all of your past students. The world is a better place because of the leaders in our community you helped to influence in the most positive and generous of ways.
Thank you, Miss Johnson/Mrs. Ballandyne/Ms. Roden/Mum. You were the best teacher and role model ever. Written by Marjorie Roden.
The Funeral Service for Diana will take place at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at River Park Funeral Home, with Fred Payton officiating. Interment will follow at St. Catherine Anglican Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550-12th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1.
