Desmond Augustus Dent
May 9, 1922 – April 4, 2013
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather, Desmond Dent, Thursday, April 4, 2013 in his 90th year.
He will be greatly missed by his daughters and their families; Diane (John) and their children: Dan (Rebecca), great granddaughter Brittany; and Suzanne of Calgary, Donna (Doug) and their children: Curtis (Amanda), great-grandson Jeremy, great-granddaughter Talia of Winnipeg, Jeffrey (Lyndsi), great-grandson Nixson of Edmonton, and Kyle (Gina) of Winnipeg.
Des was predeceased by his wife Audrey of 62 years in June of 2009. He was the eldest son of Charles and Mary, predeceased by all his siblings, Gloria, Ivor, Wendall, Mauve and Charles.
Des was respected by all who knew him. He met Audrey before enlisting in the RCAF in 1941. He served overseas stationed in England, completing his tour in 1944 and returning to Prince Albert. He and Audrey were married in 1947. He opened a grocery store on 25th street east, but soon moved into the trucking industry which he retired from in 1977. Because of his mannerisms he was known as “The Gentleman Truck driver”. He then purchased a Taxi Franchise until he sold in the mid-nineties.
Des was at home behind the wheel. He loved to holiday in U.S. Midwest, Western Coast and throughout Western Canada, always stopping in to visit relatives in B.C. and at least twice a year to see Diane in Calgary, and Donna in Winnipeg.
He spent the last 2 and half years of his life in Winnipeg where he was close to daughter Donna. He lived in assisted living and then moved to the Meadowood Nursing Home. Although Des suffered from Alzheimer’s the last few years of his life, his family learned about the disease, how to cope, and how to respond…..he had Many Good Days.
There will be no formal funeral service. A celebration and interment will take place in P.A. this summer.
We give our sincere thanks to the staff of Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home and our heartfelt thanks to Glori and Daniel for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Des to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba,
10 – 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 4G2.
