DEREK WAYNE MATHERS
October 26, 1953 – December 13, 2025
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Derek Wayne Mathers on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at the age of 72 years.
Derek is lovingly remembered by the love of his life of 42 years, Emily ( nee Grypiuk) Mathers; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry (Darlene) Mathers of Prince Albert, Jim (Judy) Mathers of St. Albert, Alberta, Gordon (Carol) Mathers of Holbein, SK, Douglas (Phyllis) Mathers of MacDowell, SK, and Ronald (Shelly) Mathers of Prince Albert, SK, his brother-in-law, Albert (Doris) Demerais as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Derek was predeceased by his parents, Stella and Harry Mathers; his brother and sister-in-law, William and Ethel Mathers; his sister and brother-in-law Thelma (Andy) Grayson; his sister, Doris Demerais; his mother-in-law, Mary Grypiuk; his father-in-law, Nick Grypiuk; and brother-in-law, Emil Grypiuk.
Derek was born in Prince Albert and raised in Nordale (Prince Albert), SK, where he completed his schooling. He attended and graduated from Tech High School. He then took a business course that was available at Tech High School after he graduated.
After graduating from the business course, Derek worked at the CN in Prince Albert and then was transferred to Saskatoon CN. He spent most of his career working as a paralegal with law firms: Terry Bekolay and Ajay Krishan. When Terry Bekolay became a judge, Ajay Krishan joined Gordon Balon Law Firm and Derek was employed there until Gordon’s retirement. Derek had integrity and was very diligent, committed, loyal and dedicated to his work and he had very strong work ethics. He did exceptional work and was counted on by many (colleagues & clients) for his expertise and experience in handling Real Estate.
Upon retirement, Derek enjoyed keeping in contact with family and friends on Facebook and playing Facebook games. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his favorite teams play, Saskatchewan Rough Riders Football, Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey, Blue-Jays Baseball, and watching various movies and current world events. He also enjoyed going for drives around the city and at times outside the city. When there was a storm happening in the summer, he would at times venture out taking risky chances and he enjoyed trying to follow some storms.
Derek will be remembered for his gentle kindness, his laughter and sense of humor, his smiles, his love for adventure, and the deep affection he held for his family. His spirit will be carried forward in every story shared, every laugh remembered, and every moment spent with those he loved so much.
Shiloh (our flame-point Siamese) instantly developed a special bond with Derek when she first arrived at our home two years ago and she showered him with so much love. Shiloh misses Derek immensely! Derek will be greatly missed by the entire family and it will not be the same with him not here. This is a huge loss for the entire family!
The family would like to give their special thanks to Mike and Susanna Botha, Wayne and Sharon Phillip, JJ Beam, Ron and Shelly Mathers, Emily’s cousin Delores (Donald) Saunders and coworkers Chris Rock & Maria Escobar, her manager and the rest of her coworkers as well as numerous others for their fervent prayers and support during this very difficult and challenging time.
