It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dennis Crivea, late of Winnipegosis, Manitoba on November 24 after a courageous and stubborn battle with Cancer. He was 70 years old.
Dennis was born in Salt Point, MB and did his growing up around Winnipegosis, MB. Raised by his dad and several older siblings, Dennis had to grow up quick in order to help his dad on the ranch and with commercial fishing. At around the time he turned 17, he decided he would begin working on the diamond rigs with his dad and other members of the community. He continued working on diamond rigs and became a driller, and for many years, was considered one of the best. His craft took him to many parts of Canada and parts of Alaska. He took pride in getting to know all aspects of drilling: from mechanics, to getting footage and even geology he got the best out of his rig.
Dennis was also a very good mechanic and was often called upon by family, friends and even strangers to fix vehicles and small motors and he rarely turned anyone away. He was also comfortable with all types of machinery leading him to work in mining, driving heavy equipment and worked for many neighboring farmers during peak seasons. He was a man of many skills and never afraid to take on tasks.
Dennis married his wife, Lucille on November 29, 1980. It was from there his journey would bring him to Saskatchewan where, along with 3 kids, the family settled on an acreage in the Hagen, SK area. Dennis would make quite an impression on the communities in and around Hagen and St. Louis with his vibrant and outgoing personality. He even took on the rodeo circuit for a while racing pony chuck wagon and chariot for a number of years. Although not everyone appreciated the quirks that came with the character, he made many friends along the way.
Later on, St. Louis would become home for many years and he took on the task of creating a new homestead along the river. It was a beautiful spot that he and Lucille worked many hours on creating their own little oasis with a view of the South Saskatchewan River that they enjoyed and cherished over morning cups of coffee and evening suppers. Eventually however, aspects of life lead to Lucille needing to move away and Dennis eventually sold their beloved river property. In his later years Dennis chased a dream of moving back home to Winnipegosis to own a small garage and do commercial fishing. Unfortunately, it was soon after moving where he was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Despite battling and scrapping away, it would eventually take him from us.
Dennis was predeceased by: sister Marilyn Crivea, sister Linda Cockle, brothers Marvin Crivea, and Lawrence Crivea and Dad, John Crivea. Dennis is survived by: many good friends in St. Louis, SK and Winnipegosis, MB area, his sister, Lorraine, his wife, partner and best friend Lucille Crivea, his sons Greg Duval (Katelyn), Paul Duval (Ann) and daughter Micheline Huber (Bob). Dennis had 6 grandkids as well, but he had a twinkle in his eye for his granddaughter Winnie Duval (25) and a special bond with grandson Lucas Duval (7), who will dearly miss his, βFar-away Grampa,β as he so dearly called him.
Grave side services for Dennis will be held in Winnipegosis in the summer and will be announced at a later date. Anyone wishing to make donations in lieu can please do so to the palliative care ward of the Dauphin Regional Health Center.
