Dennis Marvin Berg, age 73, passed away at home in Saskatoon on July 12th 2024. Dennis will always be remembered for his big smile and even bigger laugh. He attended school in Weldon and Birch Hills. He then worked in Alberta and B.C. and for Chevron Seismic in the Northwest Territories before moving to La Ronge in 1976. Jim Mowery worked in maintenance for the Department of Northern Saskatchewan and needed an assistant. Jim was an excellent teacher so Dennis added to his knowledge of fixing things beyond cars, trucks and farm machinery.
One of his first fixing things was when he was about two and decided to check out the wooden wagon wheels on the farm wagon. The big square nuts that held the wheel were covered in axle grease and so was Dennis when he came into the house much to our mother’s dismay – no hot showers to toss him into! He continued fixing things when he later worked for Armond as a tow truck driver and mechanic in La Ronge.
Dennis met Helen Ross and they were partners for many years. They built a cabin at Wapawekka Lake next to Helen’s parents, where they enjoyed hunting and fishing. Helen and her sister worked at KFC in La Ronge and later Helen worked for Athabasca Catering flying in and out of Key Lake Mine.
Dennis was driving the tow truck when he had a heart attack, so he drove himself to La Ronge Hospital. They sent him to RUH (Saskatoon) where he had stents put in. After recovering from that, he went to work for J.P. piloting semis who were hauling oversized equipment to mine sites in the north.
Eventually, he moved to Saskatoon, where Helen joined him at Ellis’s. He started working for Agrium at their Clavet plant. He enjoyed the work, the staff, and his boss. He said she could drive circles around him and any of the other drivers of the front end loader.
Then Dennis had a stroke, and life changed. He was in hospital and rehab for over a month and no longer able to work, but he continued to fix things! Everything from his vehicles, Ellis’s “collector” cars, and the riding mower.
Helen passed away in 2019 and he has missed her very much! Dennis joined Helen again on July 12th which was her birthday. Dennis was predeceased by his parents Selmer (2002) and Serena (1986),his brother Ken (1983), and niece Siovahn (2023).
He will be remembered by his brothers Barry (Jeanie), Larry and his children Tabitha and Serena, Ellis and his son Erik, his sister Jacqueline and her daughters Lynn and Donna, his sister-in-law Kathy and her children Tim, Erin and Ericka, also many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service for Dennis will be held on July 31st at 2:00PM at the Silvertone Club in Weldon, SK.
