DENNIS ALBERT VARGA
APRIL 18, 1940 – NOVEMBER 19, 2013
It is with great sadness the family announces the peaceful passing of DENNIS ALBERT VARGA on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at the Victoria Union Hospital. Dennis was born in Harris, SK and raised in Saskatoon, SK where he met and married his beloved wife, Eloise (nee Jansen) on April 21, 1962. Dennis had a lifelong fascination with electronics which started with radio and television repair. Dennis obtained his Journeymen and Teaching Certificates and began his career teaching electronics at Carlton Comprehensive High School (formerly Prince Albert Technical High School or TECH). During his career, his knowledge and skills in electronics had him working soundboards and rigging lightning for all manner of entertainment offered at the Carlton Cafetorium. Dennis developed an interest in theatre and began teaching high school drama. He lent his expertise to local theatre groups and was an active member of Odyssey Productions for several years where he expanded his skills to set designing and construction. He formally retired from teaching in 1994 but continued to substitute teach for several years in various schools within the Saskatchewan Rivers School District. Dennis and Eloise became an integral part of Prince Albert where they raised their three daughters, Linda, Judy and Chrissie. Dennis and Eloise thoroughly enjoyed their wide circle of close friends. They enjoyed spending time dining out, playing cards, going for coffee and supporting their church and arts community. They loved travelling, especially if it was to visit with family, and made trips within Canada, the United States and the British Isles. But the most memorable one of all was the infamous vacation to Disneyland with the Watson Family. Dennis was forced to slow down following some health issues in 1999 and chose to spend his time expressing his love of grain elevators, old cars and prairie scenes through his watercolour painting. He was proud to be given the opportunity to display his work at the Station Arts Centre in Rosthern, the summer art displays at Emma Lake and Shellbrook, and at Amy's Restaurant and The Bison Cafe in Prince Albert. He enjoyed spending his time painting and always described himself as a self-taught artist. Although Dennis was always busy teaching, tinkering, tending, building, painting, remodeling, or repairing something, he was most content spending time surrounded by his family; usually sitting quietly in the chaos, listening and loving us all. Dennis was a gentle, kind, patient, loving, warm-hearted man who reminded us to appreciate the beauty and simplicity in everything. Dennis will be lovingly remembered by his daughters; Linda (Dave) Slingsby, Judy (Todd) Bell, and Chrissie (Tim) McNab; his grandchildren Chelsey (Rodi) Abdou, Kirsten Bell (Steven Cowie), Jaden Bell, Lachlan and Arawyn McNab; his sister Kathy (Donald) Schmidke, his sister-in-law Francie (Paul) Hamilton; and niece Emma (Andrew Dolan) Hamilton. He was predeceased by his wife Eloise; grandson Brenden; his parents Hilda and Gabriel and brother Stephen.
“We give him back to You dear Lord, who gave him to us. Yet as you did not lose him in giving, so we have not lost him in his return. For what is yours is ours always, and life is eternal, and love is immortal; And what we sometimes call death is only a horizon, and a horizon is nothing more than the limit of our sight. Lift us up O God that we may see further and cleanse our eyes that we may see more clearly; And draw us closer to you, through Jesus Christ Our Lord.”
Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at St. David’s Anglican Church, 500 – 24th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with The Reverend Norbert Haukenfrers officiating. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation, 279 – 3rd Avenue N., Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Drew Gray, Funeral Director.
