David "Dave" G. Phillips

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of David “Dave” G. Phillips. After several months of enduring a lengthy undiagnosed illness, Dave passed away at the Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon, SK, on February 22nd, 2026, at the age of 76.
Dave was born in Saskatoon in 1950 to Marge and Bill Phillips. As a youth he was an avid hockey player until his teens when the allure of rock n’ roll drew him into the local music scene. Dave played bass guitar in several different local bands in the 60’s and 70’s, at first locally, provincially, and eventually across the country. In the late 70’s that lifestyle lost its appeal and he went on to become a Journeyman carpenter, built a house at Anglin Lake and settled in as a family man.
Dave married Hilary Gerwing and they spent 47 years together, raising 2 daughters, Kate (Jeff Cheveldeoff) who blessed them with their first grandchild, Haylee, and Amie (Brandon Anderson) who more recently introduced Alyvia.
Dave was a man of many talents. He was an excellent musician, an innovative builder and thinker, and an avid organizer. Although, in 47 years it never became apparent what his system was as it changed frequently. Dave had his own unique take on things, taking on challenges without hesitation. He is probably one of very few to build a hexagon building with each side being a different length because anyone can build one that’s symmetrical. He loved road trips, visiting, and jamming with friends along the way, many of whom were lifelong friends.
Dave will be fondly remembered for his dry, quirky sense of humour, his kindness, his love of jam butties and his ability to adapt to the idiosyncrasies of his wife and in-laws “you Gerwings!” He was often referred to as “Saint Dave” as he tolerated and sometimes embraced the many pets, goofy pranks, and a houseful of women who did their best to keep him on his toes. Although Dave didn’t always express it, he cherished his family and many, many good friends. He will be sorely missed by all including his giant dog, Jerry.
Dave’s family would like to thank the many medical personnel involved in his care both in Prince Albert, SK, and Saskatoon, SK, including the ambulance and air personnel who took such great care of him. In particular, the family would like to thank Dr. Gordon Surkan who truly went above and beyond for us during this difficult time. We will be forever grateful.
