Daryl Ehlert
1949- 2016
Daryl was born in Watson, SK, sixth in a family of nine children, and grew up on his parents’ farm 16 miles SE of town. He attended Sproule Country School until it closed; then he took his high school years in Watson, graduating in 1968. But a large part of his practical education was learned at the side of his father, Alfred, and his brother, Lyle, in the farm shop where he became skilled in equipment design and manufacture, welding, and mechanical repair. He also worked for a local construction company throughout most of his high school years. He took over the family farm shortly after graduation. He married Doreen Schwartz on April 24, 1971. Daryl took great pride in the shop he built, and spent so much time repairing and making farm equipment for his own farm, and for friends and neighbours. In the shop, he was truly in his element. From an early age, their five children, Jody, Darren, Lisa, Lois, and Amanda worked alongside their parents in the home and on the farm. Daryl’s expertise was often called upon to help others, and they were never turned away. Daryl was always an active church member, served on the LeRoy Co-op Board, was active in the Watson Jaycees, and helped many political candidates during election time. Too many dry years in the 80’s resulted in a farm auction in 1994, and the move to Prince Albert, where he began yard maintenance for two condos and worked as supervisor of the glass department at Ashly Cabinets and Windows for 10 years. He moved on to Solid Rock Carpentry and Renovation, where he worked with his two sons, Darren and Jody, until his health no longer allowed him to work. Daryl was a lake person. Whether he was waterskiing, fishing, giving rides in his boat, pulling the tube full of squealing children (or adults), playing with the children at the beach, or hosting large gatherings on the back patio, Daryl loved to be at the lake. Family was so important to him, and he loved all 19 of his grandchildren and both his grandchildren-in-law very much. He loved to tease and make people laugh. He loved country music, and had a song to fit any occasion. On Sundays, he loved to fill his pockets with candy and hand them out to all the children after church, aka Candyman. Everywhere Daryl went in the community, he made friends. He was respected for his wide range of knowledge, skills, and abilities, but it is Daryl himself who will be sorely missed by his immediate and extended families, his friends and work colleagues. Daryl will be lovingly remembered by his wife Doreen; his children Jody (Michelle) Ehlert of Prince Albert and family Tim, Andy and Ethan; Darren (Kristen) Ehlert of Prince Albert and family Riley, Isaac, Joseph and Isabella; Lisa (Michael) Stead of Prince Albert and family Katie, Jake, Abby & Arianna and Ben; Lois (Robin) Branscombe of Prince Albert and family Aaron (Darby), Evan (Elann Impey), Rachael, Jared, Alyssa, Kayla and Naomi; Amanda Ehlert of Prince Albert; his siblings Raymond (Alvina) Ehlert of Watson, Garry (Sheryl) Ehlert of Saskatoon, Louise (Ian) Henderson of Airdrie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by parents, Alfred and Rose Ehlert, siblings Lyle, Edwin, Ron, Norman Ehlert and Phyllis Harvey. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, March 18, 2016 at The Embassy Church 888 Central Ave Prince Albert, SK with Dale Hassett officiating. Private family interment will follow at the South Hill Cemetery, Prince Albert, SK. Family and friends wishing to send online condolences are welcome to visit www.beaulacfuneralhome.com.
