On April 19, 2014, Charles Alexander Phelps lost his long fight with Alzheimer’s disease. Charlie was born to Archibald and Flora (McCuaig) Phelps on August 10, 1924. In Charlie’s younger years, he had jobs that took him away from home; lumber mill in Big River, and farm work in Eston and Kindersley. On August 5, 1943, Charlie joined the Navy, his call for Naval service came in February 1944. Charlie sailed on the HMCS Fort Francis, doing convoy duty in the North Atlantic until the war ended in 1945, being discharged from the Navy October 9, 1945. Upon his return, he married his soulmate Patricia (Jacobs) on August 1, 1950. Charlie worked as a city policeman from 1949-1953, at which time he decided to farm full time. Buying land from his Uncle Donald in 1951, they then moved to the farm in 1955. He broke land for many neighbours as well as himself and had a sawmill operation with another neighbour. After several years as a school trustee, Charlie became interested in municipal affairs putting in 28 years in all, beginning as a councillor for the RM of P.A. in 1970. Charlie held many offices in municipal and agricultural organizations: President of the SARM, Reeve of the RM of P.A. for 3 terms, member and later president of the Hudson Bay Route Assoc., among many others. Charlie also loved flying, earning his private pilot license in 1974, hunting and of course farming. Charlie and Pat enjoyed many trips through the years, within Canada and the U.S., as well as overseas. Family was also very important to Charlie, a very proud husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Charlie is survived by his wife Patricia (Jacobs) Phelps; his children Bonnie (Wayne) Whitbread, Beverly (Victor) Casavant, Jean (Bob) Blocka and Doug (Karen) Phelps; grandchildren Rory (Veronica) Whitbread, Joe Whitbread, Charlene (Perry) Bicknell, Vicki (Verlin) Casavant, Chantelle (Jim) Jacobs and Trevor Casavant, Nicole (Brian Causey) and Chad Blocka, Logan and Colton Phelps; as well as 15 great-grandchildren; sister Ivy MacDonald; brother-in-law Chuck Vaughan; special friend Sandy Spademan; as well as many nieces and nephews; and the wonderful second family who took such great care of Charlie at Mont St. Joseph. Charlie was predeceased by his parents Archie and Flora; his sister Eva; brother James; mother and father-in-law Orin and Lilian Jacobs; sister and brother-in-law Esther (Norman) Pederson; brother-in-law Ken MacDonald. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Calvary United Church, 114 – 25th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Nora Vedress officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.
