Charles Frederick Griffin

Charles Frederick Griffin was born in Prince Albert on May 16, 1921 and passed away peacefully on December 13, 2013. He spent the first several years of his life in the Sturgeon Valley district where his parents farmed at the time. They moved into Prince Albert when Fred was seven years old and operated a grocery store at 511 River Street East. He attended Connaught School, Prince Edward School and graduated from P.A.C.I in 1939. He joined the Royal Regina Rifles in June 1940 and remained with the regiment until December 1945. He took part in the “D Day” landing, where his landing craft hit a beach obstacle and more than half of the soldiers were killed. He served in France, Holland and Belgium when the regiment ending up in Germany at the end of the war. He returned to Prince Albert in December 1945 after discharge and worked at the Northern Wood Preservers until he joined the Sick’s Brewery staff in 1947. Sick’s became Molson’s where he spent 33 years as the Accounting Manager prior to retiring in July 1980. He married the love of his life in 1948 and celebrated 65 years of marriage to Marjorie (nee Giles). Over the years he was active in the community as Lifetime Member of both the Army and Navy and Airforce Veterans Association and the Royal Canadian Legion. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, President and held other positions in the Local Lions Club, President of the United Appeal, Treasurer of the Winter Festival, Dominion and Provincial President of the Royal Regina Rifles Association. Fred was an active citizen and volunteered his accounting skills for many organizations in the community. Fred and Marg were congregation member of both St. Alban’s and St. George’s Anglican Churches in Prince Albert. He was also an avid sportsman; curling with the Seniors for more than 25 years and active with the Prince Albert and Waskesiu Golf Clubs. Of all his activities fishing was his passion. He also enjoyed the Prince Albert Raider games, until failing eyesight took its hold. Fred enjoyed the many years he had in retirement at Waskesiu: fishing, golfing and spending many hours with his grandchildren. Fred is survived by his wife: Marjorie; his four children: David (Bonnie) Griffin of Paddockwood, SK, C. Faye Griffin of Langley, BC, Bill (Sharon) Griffin of Prince Albert, SK and Cheryl (James) Beck of Ardrossan, AB. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Tracy (Cam) Buffalo, Brad (Lonnie), Kirk, Kerry (Jessica) and Mathew (Laura) Griffin (David and Bonnie’s children), Zachary and Olivia Griffin (Bill and Sharon’s children), Warren, Sarah, Evan and Nolan Beck (James and Cheryl’s children); his five great-grandchildren: Bryce, Sidney, Ben, Gabrielle and Fiona; his sister: Irene Abercombie of Coventry, England; his sister-in-law: Kay Griffin of Christopher Lake, SK; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his daughter: Sandra; his parents: William & Hilda; his brothers: Roy and Bob; and his parents-in-law: W. Bert & Lavina Giles. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2013 – 2:00 pm, MacKenzie Chapel, 130 9th St. E., Prince Albert, SK. Interment to follow at South Hill Cemetery, Soldier Section.
