Cec Corrigal
1924 – 2013
It is with great sadness that the family of Cecil Edward “Cec” Corrigal announce his passing at the age of 89. Cec peacefully left us with family at his side early Sunday evening on June 2, 2013. Cec is survived by his wife of 70 years, Kathleen “Babe” Corrigal (nee Pirie); his daughters Faye Flaminio and Donna Flamminio (Tony); his grandchildren Anna (Daniel) Flaminio, Chella (Kevin) Flaminio, Jayson (Teresa) Headrick and Giovanni (Jami) Flamminio, and great-grandchildren Cruz, Vincenza, Thomas, Lauren and Milana; as well as his many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother Keith (Sheila) MacDonald and was predeceased by his brother Roderick and sister-in-law, Jane MacDonald. Cec was born in the Gerrond district of St. Louis, Saskatchewan on February 26th, 1924 and his memories of being raised in St. Louis are very fond. He always attributed his values and way of life to the lessons from his grandfather and grandmother during his childhood years. When Cec was 15 years old he began work at the Dundurn Military Camp. He joined the Regina Rifles at the age of 16 and was sent to Debert, Nova Scotia for training. He was discharged due to complications from rheumatic fever and upon his return in 1941 he began work as an airframe mechanic with M & C Aviation in Prince Albert. In 1942, Cec volunteered for the Army again, becoming a signals instructor in Vernon, BC. However his medical history caught up with him and he was discharged again, returning home to sell advertising for the Prince Albert Daily Herald. It was during this time that he met and married his beloved Babe. In 1943, Cec joined the Navy and began training in Halifax, Nova Scotia as a gunner on a merchant ship during World War II. He served in the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Mediterranean for the duration of the war. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Pacific Star and the War Medal for his committed service to the Army and Navy. One of Cec's true passions in life was softball, and upon returning home from the war he commenced his playing career. Cec won a provincial title with the Prince Albert Jacks. In 2002 he was inducted into the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame. Cec was inducted not only as a player with the Jacks, but also as a Builder with the Corrigal Seals, a team he sponsored for many years. Cec joined the fur business in 1950, working for Alex Aaron, and eventually opened his own store, Cec Corrigal Furs and Fashions. Cec became well known for his noon hour TV shows and unique commercials, as well as his signature saying “Repeat, Repeat…No Interest”. He retired from the fur business in 1996. Community Service was a central to Cec's life. He was an avid member of the Kinsmen Club and became an honorary member. Cec committed himself to helping those who were struggling with alcohol addiction and volunteered countless hours to a twelve step program by speaking and giving his time to those who needed help. Cec's motivational speaking was also appreciated by a number of people. He was the MC for many events including political rallies for Prime Ministers Trudeau and Diefenbaker. Cec's passion to help others and his ability to help his community prosper was recognized when he received the 1984 Prince Albert Citizen of the Year award. Cec was a kind and loving man. His selflessness and affection was what always made people want to be around him. His smile and laugh were contagious on many levels. He took pride in Sunday suppers at his house, where family and friends would gather religiously. Cec will be greatly missed. Cec’s family would like to acknowledge the outstanding care given to him by the staff and nurses of the Victoria Union Hospital and the Good Shepherd Villas, especially head nurse, Pat Chuey. Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 7, 2013 at St. Pauls Presbyterian Church, 12th Street and 1st Avenue East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Dr. R.M.A. Sandy Scott officiating. Interment will be held at South Hill Cemetery. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be given to the Hearth & Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 – 3rd Avenue N, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8.
