BETTY GODIN
Betty Godin, born Elizabeth Martin McMurchie, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2014 at the age of 89 years. Betty was born on September 9, 1925, in Rutherglen, Glasgow, Scotland. She married Leon Godin on April 10th 1945. She came to Canada as a War Bride. They raised 5 children Michael Godin (Edie), Yvonne Irwin (Don), Sharon Dumont (Alex), Pat Jacobson (Brian), Renee Campbell (Steve); children of Norm Bomphrey, Gary (Andrea), Donald (Wendy); numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary McMurchie, Jeanette Godin and Karen Godin; nieces and nephews in Canada and Scotland. How brave, strong and independent she was to leave everything behind to come to Canada where it was a complete unknown and end up on a farm at Tweedsmuir, SK. How different life must have been for a city girl to move to rural SK in the late 1940’s. What an adventure! Later Leon and she moved to Prince Albert where they raised their family. Betty embraced her sons-in-law and they easily fit in with her. She was involved with the War brides for many years making most of her closest lifelong friends in that group. She also belonged to the Daughters of Isabella and volunteered at Mont S. Joseph Care Home. Betty loved to dance! That was where she met Leon, at a dance. She taught Ballroom dancing for many years. She had many loves, she love clothes which she shopped for passionately especially jewelry which she wore proudly, books that she read constantly. She enjoyed the cabin Leon and she had at Murray Point at Emma Lake. They owned the Quarter Moon Cafe from January 1967 to January 1972. Most memorable of her jobs were her many years at Modern Home Furniture and The Bay. Leon passed away when she was only 56. She then went on to find happiness once again for over 20 years with her partner Norm Bomphrey. She has resided at Mont St. Joseph Care Home for the past 7 years. The family wishes to extend a huge Thank You to the entire staff at Mont St. Joseph. Their care, compassion, friendship and love surrounded her for many years; for this we are deeply grateful. She was 89 at the time of her passing, so celebrate that as she was always strong and healthy until this last little bit. Betty was predeceased by her loving husband Leon; parents Michael and Mary McMurchie; parents-in-law Romuald and Rosa Godin; great-grandchildren Mariah and Ashton; partner Norm Bomphrey; brothers Dugald McMurchie and Edmuand McMurchie; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 27 at River Park Memorial Chapel. Father Roque Concepcion will officiate. It is the family’s request that memorial donations may be made to Mont St. Joseph Foundation. Interment will take place in the Garden of Gethsemane, Prince Albert Memorial Gardens.
