Bertha Kostka
1915 – 2013
Kostka – Bertha, late of Herb Bassett Home, passed away April 14, 2013 at the age of 97. Bertha was born October 2, 1915 at Buchanan, SK. Shortly thereafter her family relocated to the Claytonville area north east of Prince Albert where she grew up and attended school. She loved nature and enjoyed helping with outdoor work. Bertha married Kazimir Kostka in 1934. They settled on a farm at Claytonville where she resided and worked most of her adult life. Bertha was a homemaker and loved her flowers and gardening. She always grew a bountiful garden and for a few years made a business of selling her produce at the market garden in Prince Albert. Bertha enjoyed sewing and knitting and produced woolen socks, mitts and sweaters for her family. She loved to associate with people and all her neighbors were trusted friends. She had a very strong faith and believed in the power of prayer, which, by example, was passed down to her family. After Kazimir passed away in 1978, she remained at the farm with her son Edward. She also learned how to drive in case she had to go somewhere in an emergency. Bertha eventually moved to the Herb Bassett Care Home where she resided for the past 8 years. Bertha is survived by her two sons, Edward Kostka and Joe (Irene) Kostka; two grandchildren, Paula (Darren) Sundbo and Brian (Aida) Kostka; four great grandchildren, Evan and Kennedi Sundbo, Taddeus and Lucas Norkis-Kostka and by numerous nieces and nephews. Bertha was predeceased by her husband Kazimir; her father Bill Moskaluk; her mother Helen Zagrabelny and step father Harry Zagrabelny; her brother Mike, and her sisters Annie Medynski, Frances Stankowski and Mary Pastuck. The family wishes to thank Dr. Chrusch and all the staff at the Herb Bassett Home for their dedicated and loving care. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church, 589 – 9th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Celebrant Reverend Father Maurice Fiolleau. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Herb Bassett Home, 1220 – 25th Street West, Prince Albert, SK S6V 4N9. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray’s Funeral Chapel, Lorne Adams, Funeral Director.
