Bernice Polowski (Wutke) was born June 6, 1929 in Hodgeville SK to Fredrick and Kathrina Wutke. When she was thirteen, they moved to Moose Jaw. After grade 8 Mom got a job working in the laundry. She married Nicholas Polowski in 1948. They moved to Regina where Nick had a job as locomotive engineer with the CNR. After two children, Robert and Mary Lou they moved to Prince Albert where six more children were added. Judy, Roger, Ron, Wesley, Kelly Anne, and Caroline. Mom was a stay at home mom working very hard to make a home for all of us. As the kids grew up and moved away from home, mom decided to work outside the home. She started to work as a care aid at the old Mont St. Joseph. Mom was a natural caregiver and trained on the job. She was a compassionate person and was well liked by all the residents.
Mom loved all her grandchildren, there were lots. She had a book with all their birthdays written down. It was hard for her to keep track of them all but she tried. She always liked to hear what they were interested. Now came the great grandchildren and there were lots of them. They were wonderful. Mom loved to get a visit from any of them. It was getting harder for her to get around so had to depend on family visiting her. She was on a high whenever someone would visit and she would talk about it for days afterwards. There are so many things we could say about mom but anyone who truly knew her, will know her as steadfast in her faith and prayerful, strong and courageous facing any trouble or problem with grace and determination to be her best. She was a friend to all.
Mom spent her last year at Mont St. Joseph Home due to failing health. She was well cared for and the family felt fortunate to have her living there. There was a welcome feeling each time we visited mom. The staff were friends and always treated mom with respect even when she was giving them a hard time. God bless them for their talent to care for those who cannot do it for themselves. Thank you to Father DJ who brought comfort to mom with each of his visits. Thank you father DJ for your final prayers with mom and the family.
Winter time was for knitting. Many of us have been the recipients of her articles. As kids we had hats, scarves and a siwash each winter. Summer time there’s nothing mom loved more than a picnic. The more people the better. She loved a game of softball, swinging on the swings and just being outdoors with friends and family. Berry picking was always on the list of things to do just for the joy of picking and making her own jams and canned fruit.
Bernice is survived by her children, daughter Mary Lou Blazic (Ivan), son Roger (Joyce), son Ron (Sheila), son Wesley (Helen), daughter Kelly Anne Holt (Jerry), daughter Caroline (Robert). Her brother Harold Wutke. As well Bernice is survived by her many grandchildren and great grandchildren and many other members of her extended family.
