She will also be dearly missed by her numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Angeline Charlebois, Armand Poitras, Lawrence Poitras, Clarice Pettitt, Ernest Poitras; her sister-in-law, Claire Bergen; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents, Doria (nee Lacoursiere) and Leon Poitras; her loving husband, Omer Despins; and her sisters, Doris Poitras in childhood, Bernadette LaPrairie, Marguerite Guillet, and Laurette Lyerly; her two sons-in-law, George Souter and Augusto Marini; and her great-granddaughter, Tory Lindsay.
Beatrice was born on December 13, 1920, in Delmas, SK. She married Omer Despins on June 24, 1941, in Blaine Lake, SK. Beatrice and Omer celebrated 52 years of marriage before his passing in May 1994. She was a homemaker and selfless giver. After her first priority, her family, she opened her door and heart to be mom for many children and teens from Northern Saskatchewan, teaching them about life, the value of education and most importantly, family.
She was a hard-working woman; she worked seven days a week from 6 am to 10 pm cooking, cleaning, sewing, tending the garden, baking the most amazing bread, buns and apple pies. Still she found time in her day to clean and bandage cuts and scrapes, teaching kids how to cook and comfort them. Once her children were grown, she devoted more than 30 years to the Catholic Women’s League at Sacred Heart Cathedral. She volunteered many hours working at the Thrift Shop, or “Tiffany’s” as she loved to call it. She spent many hours knitting, and crocheting mittens, scarves, afghans, and sewing quilts for her family. Many were also donated to bazaars and shelters.
She was a patient woman with her sometimes-rambunctious children. Her favorite pastime was to play cards. “Golf” was always fun as she never wanted to give any “surprises” to her opponents. She had a wry sense of humor that surprised new card players and often made everyone laugh. Her card playing skills were to be revered and feared.
