Barney G. Charles
Born May 14, 1972 Passed away May 24, 2017
Age 45 Years
Barney was born in Stanley Mission, and attended the Keethanow School. However, he did attend grade 5 for five months at the Residential School in Prince Albert. He spent his summers growing up in Davin and Dead Lakes and was always the first one to greet the tourists when they arrived at the Davin Lake Fishing Lodge and he was always eager to help them when they got back from fishing. Barney enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting with his dad, uncles, brothers and his many friends.
He liked to play pool, shoot darts and spent the winters skiing with his brother Dennis and Arthur Ratt when they were young.
He loved to visit his family and friends and meet new people. He especially enjoyed laughing and teasing those around him.
Barney and Kristine were married August 12, 2000. First living in Stanley Mission, then Prince Albert and finally moving to Saskatoon in 2014.
Together Barney and Kristine travelled to Las Vegas, the Dominican Republic, England, Scotland, Ireland and France. Ireland was definitely his favorite place overseas but Paris and the Eiffel tower was a close second.
In Saskatoon, he enjoyed being near the river and going for rides with his wife around the city, especially along Spadina. They spent a lot of time sitting and walking at the river by the university watching the birds, beavers and planes. Barney and Kristine liked to go and watch special documentaries at the movie theaters. Barney loved cooking. In Saskatoon, he was always happy to send baking to Kristine’s office for everyone to enjoy. He also spent time helping Kristine with her university classes, answering her questions and discussing Cree perspectives and ways of knowing, as well as translating Cree for her.
Barney is survived by his wife Kristine, his sons, Keegan McLeod, Davin McKenzie, his parents, Isaac and Jean Charles, his brothers, Dennis, Quentin and Nicholas Charles, his sisters Marilyn, Elizabeth, Beatrice Charles, his Grandmother Mabel McLeod and many nieces and nephews.
