Angus “Gus” John MacAuley
(May 14, 1947 – November 25, 2011)
Angus John “Gus” MacAuley (RPF): a life well lived from May 14, 1947 till November 25, 2011. Gus was born in Vancouver, BC and raised in La Ronge, SK. Gus graduated from Notre Dame College in Wilcox and after a summer with the Hudson Bay Company, attended the Renewable Resources Program at Kelsey Institute. Gus was employed with the Saskatchewan Government, Department of Natural Resources. His first posting was in Portage La Loche as well as many other northern postings such as Uranium City, Ile a la Crosse, Buffalo Narrows and Prince Albert. Gus married Pat in 1968, and began a 43 year journey of love, partnership, and family. Their children Erin and Neil helped to bless the journey.
Gus obtained his Commercial Pilots license in 1970 and became a flying Conservation Officer for the Department of Natural Resources flying a Super Cub through out northern Saskatchewan. Gus became Regional Director for Buffalo Narrows and Prince Albert Regions before he began his career in forest fire management. His knowledge and foresight in aviation and fire behaviour initiated the provincial government to acquire the firebombing fleet that is used to this day by the province. His expertise was called for in Germany, England, Argentina, and Chili and Mexico.
After 32 years with the provincial government, Gus took his leave and started MacAuley & Associates dealing with fire and fire investigations, which he was still actively doing when he passed. Gus loved his cabin on Lac La Ronge. He especially loved being surrounded by family and friends, trips with his granddaughter Allison to Marmot Basin in Jasper, golfing trips to Fairmont with dear friends and the annual ski trip with “the guys”. Attending RAIDER and RIDER games were essential events in Gus’s life. His willingness to share his sense of humour, lend a hand, offer advice and continually seek knowledge defined his approach and philosophy of life.
Gus has left his wife Pat; children Erin of Edmonton and Neil (KimAnn Bell) of La Ronge; granddaughter Allison and his father Norman of Kelowna who mourn and love him deeply. He was predeceased by his mother Hetty and his brother Keith. Gus has a long-time friend Fr. Jim Fiori, OMI, who is a missionary in Kenya. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Mission will be gratefully accepted: AMMI Lacombe Canada MAMI 601 Taylor St. West, Saskatoon, Sk. S7M0C9 Attention Kenya Mission.
Please join Gus’s family in a celebration of his well-lived life at 2:00 p.m., on Saturday, December 10 at the E.A. Rawlinson Centre, Prince Albert.
