Alixena “Nene” Jessie Brown Hidlebaugh was born in Nethy Bridge, Scotland to Christina and Alexander Wood on October 30th, 1926. Alixena, lovingly called Nene by everyone who knew her, had three sisters and four brothers.
Nene grew up in Scotland where she met a Canadian Soldier, Arthur Rae Hidlebaugh in the spring of 1941. On December 24th, 1944 they became engaged and were married March 17th, 1945.
Arthur returned home to Canada in 1945 and Nene and baby Shirley joined him in Choiceland on May 15, 1946.
Times were tough as Art and Nene broke the land, but they were blessed with wonderful neighbors who always seemed to know when their cupboards were bare. In 1975 they sold the farm and moved into Choiceland.
Mum and Dad enjoyed attending the local dances and were avid hockey fans. Mum joined Choiceland Royal Purple in 1961 and was an original chartered member. She received an honorary lifetime membership in 2010. Mum was involved in community organizations such as Heart and Stroke Foundation, Kidney Foundation, Cancer Society, Minor Hockey and Recreation and many more. She was an advocate for injustices in the world and wrote many, many letters to officials at all levels of government.
Mum had numerous hobbies such as knitting and gardening. She loved to dance and enjoyed the Nipawin Hawks hockey games. Mum donated most of her knitted work to the Salvation Army.
Nene will be loved and greatly missed. She is survived by three children Shirley (Jack) Hein of Shellbrook, Lynn (Hugh) Ryan of Red Deer, AB, Kenneth of Tisdale and her daughter-in-law Sherry Michalyca-Hidlebaugh of Nipawin. Nene is also survived by her sister Allison (Bobby) Harold of Scotland and sister-in-law Betty Hidlebaugh of Saskatoon and many nieces and nephews.
