Alice Cheal
1930 ~ 2023
The family of Alice Cheal (née Tienkamp) sadly announce her passing on February 7, 2023, at the age of 92. Alice was born September 6, 1930, in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan. She was named after her paternal grandmother Aaltje Tienkamp however, preferred to use the name Alice as few were able to correctly pronounce her given name. She was the oldest of seven children, and spent a great deal of time trying to keep her younger siblings on the straight and narrow. She attended school at Heatherdell and Coolidge schools, continuing her education to the 9th grade. She later attended a bible college in Southern Saskatchewan as well.
On October 25, 1950, Alice married George Cheal and joined him on the family farm. Together they had five children. They ran the farm for many years together before turning it over to the next generation. Alice was involved in all areas of the farm from driving tractor when necessary to the bookkeeping!
Alice was always active in her community, early on with the Henribourg Ladies’ Auxiliary. Together with her husband, she spent many hours helping to build the Spruce Home United Church. She also held executive positions on the church board for many years and organized numerous fall suppers. She was a founding member of the Spruce Home Senior’s Club in which she was active for decades. Alice was a fixture in 4-H, receiving a 40-year leadership award, when she was not acting as a leader, she continued to be a mentor and cheerleader for generations of family members.
To say Alice was a fantastic gardener is an understatement, her yard exploded every summer with flowers, fruits and veggies. Her garden was known to provide a goodie bag (or two) for anyone who came to visit. In the winter, she had time to enjoy curling, first on the ice with family and friends and once she was a bit older watching the pros on television whenever possible. In her retirement, she spent many an hour on the bleachers watching her family members at various sporting events constantly cheering them on.
Alice is survived by her children, Gordon (Eleanor), Linda (Gary) Smith, Darrell (Carol) and Cheryl (Greg) Elliott; her grandchildren, Crystal (Trevor) Vilness, Amber Viklund (Cody Langford), Bradley (Crystal) Cheal, Katie (Matthew) Wilson, Ashley Viklund, Christopher (Samantha) Cheal, Karsten (Nicole) Elliott, and Bryanne Elliott; her great-grandchildren, Casey, Reid, Laura, Hanna and George Wilson, Lily, Abigail and Bennett Cheal, Oliver and Gabriel Langford, Corbin and Cirilla Cheal and Adalie Elliott; her brother, Gerry (Birgit Gates); her sisters-in-law, Sylvia Tienkamp, Jeanette Tienkamp and Joanne Johnson.
Alice was predeceased by her husband, George Cheal; her son, Bryan Cheal; her parents, Marcus and Gerrigje Tienkamp; her father and mother-in-law, William and Lily Cheal; her sisters, Jana (Marvin) Biggar and Margaret (Edwin) Thall; her brothers, Mark Tienkamp, Lenard Tienkamp and Ken Tienkamp; her brother-in-law, Roy (Flo) Cheal; her sisters-in-law, Joan (John) Vancoughnett and Carmen Tienkamp.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to a charity of the donor’s choice.
