AUDREY WIEMKEN
December 16, 1917 ~ July 4, 2012
Our much loved mother passed from this life at Parkland Place on July 4, 2012. Mom was born and raised in Earl Grey, SK and after graduating from high school she went immediately into nurses training at the Regina General Hospital. She obtained her RN status in 1940. While visiting her sister Tillie at Whittome, SK, mom met Paul Wiemken at a community social event. Long distance courting did not suit Dad so Mom moved to Melfort and worked at the hospital until they married on April 7, 1942. Mom loved farm life and worked very hard for the next 53 years, at which time Dad passed (1995). Mom made the decision on her own to move to Diefenbaker Place in Melfort, then Nirvana Assisted Living and finally Parkland Place, after she broke her hip and was no longer able to walk.
Mom was never idle except for the one hour catnap she’d take every Sunday just before our family went for our weekly drive in the country. Even when she watched TV she had to be making something and she kept this up until approximately age 90. Many of mom’s friends and acquaintances were lucky enough to be given some of her beautifully braided coat hangers. All her family members have closets full of them. She made many beautiful quilts for her family and she even made us each a feather tick and feather pillow. She was a talented seamstress and often made her own sewing patterns if she couldn’t find one she liked. We will never forget all the lessons she taught us. Most of all we will remember that she was always there . . . always.
Mom is survived by her 5 daughters; Valerie Wiemken, Janet (Winston) South, Paula Zales, Muriel (Bill) Tweed and Connie (Kelly)Holliston; her brother Rudy; her daughter-in-law Tena Wiemken; 13 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Paul in 1995 and her son David in 2000.
