The Position
Under the direct supervision of and directly reporting to the Finance Manager, the Accountant will be responsible for a variety of accounting, finance and contract management duties. The successful candidate will possess knowledge and experience to provide guidance and support to other members of the Finance Team, program managers and member First Nation communities. The primary responsibility of this position is to work as part of a dynamic and growing team in the areas of financial management and accounting, including communicating results to various stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement processes in collaboration with finance and program managers.
- Maintains the books of account for the STC corporations as assigned.
- Ensures that office administration and financial systems (including procedures) are being followed and performs follow-up as required.
- Provides financial reports for supervisors, managers and the CFO to review on a regular basis.
- Liaises with supervisors and managers to assist with budget and financial statement management.
- In collaboration with the Finance Manager, assumes operational responsibility for matters related to finance such as:
- Maintenance of a chart of accounts for assigned program activities.
- Provides guidance and support for accounts payables and other operations as they pertain to general accounting, special projects accounting, and reporting.
- Responsible for accounts receivable.
- Prepares monthly bank reconciliations.
- Preparing journal entries monthly and for year-end closing.
- Ensuring the monthly financial reports are distributed to program directors monthly.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of finance related documents (e.g.: invoices for overpayments, program transfers, adjustments, Payroll Benefits Listings, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues; meeting compliance requirements, and providing audit references.
- Ensuring that up-to-date program and accounting files are maintained and reconciled, including payment summary and information files.
- For year-end audits, preparing journal entries, reconciling balance sheet accounts, preparing audit schedules and providing samples to the auditors; and
- Performing other duties related to the financial operation of the corporation as required.
Education and Experience
- Minimum education and experience are a minimum two-year Accountancy or Business Administration Diploma more than 5 years’ experience or a bachelor’s degree (accounting major) and 2 years’ experience.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Must have a working knowledge of and skill in accounting software, Sage 300 preferably.
- Must demonstrate skills in PC software applications, specifically the MS Office programs (Excel and Word).
- Must demonstrate excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills (both oral and written).
- Able to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently.
- Ability to apply critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
- Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines.
- Good organizational, time management and prioritizing skills.
- Ability to adapt to and learn new software.
- Must be able to interpret and apply policies and procedures when performing assigned tasks.
- Must be able to maintain sensitive and confidential information.
- Must be an organized, enthusiastic and professional person who is self-motivated, flexible and adaptable.
- Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, member communities, other related organizations and service providers and work as a member of a team.
- Knowledge of the political, social and economic objectives of the Saskatoon Tribal Council and of the Dakota, Cree, and Saulteaux cultures will be considered an asset.
Other Employment Conditions
- Must have a valid Saskatchewan driver’s license and reliable vehicle and meet STC’s insurance requirements.
- Must provide a current, original, Canadian Criminal Record Check (CPIC) as a condition of employment.
- Must be bondable.
